Taught Higher Degrees

Newman University College has a variety of postgraduate options for students seeking to further their studies or knowledge beyond undergraduate level. Students will be expected to study and research contemporary developments in the field, with the support of academic staff who have extensive experience and have published widely in their area.

Newman’s programmes have been designed to enable students to access the latest developments in their field at an advanced level. Newman offers postgraduate programmes in areas where we can provide high quality teaching, learning and resources.

A number of Newman’s subject areas offer taught higher degrees leading to the award of MA or MSc, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate. These courses can be undertaken on a part-time basis enabling students to combine study with demanding professional lives.

Research Degrees
These are higher degrees gained by in-depth research leading to the development of a thesis. Following several years of study, either full or part-time, a PhD thesis will normally be in the range of 40,000-80,000 words and be original research which enhances knowledge in the field. You will be given appropriate support and research training by experienced supervisors, both at Newman and the University of Leicester, which is the awarding body.

Distance/Blended Learning Higher Degrees
Some courses are delivered by either distance or blended learning, which offers a combination of on-line materials, with face-to-face taught and practical sessions based at Newman University College. Extensive on-line support is available.

Postgraduate Teacher Education (PGCE)
Newman’s PGCE courses confer qualified teacher status (QTS) in the relevant age phase. They are available at both Professional Graduate Certificate and Postgraduate Certificate level. The Professional Certificate will prepare applicants for teaching and offers full QTS. The Postgraduate Certificate will also include 60 credits at Master's level in addition to full QTS. The Postgraduate level qualification will be offered to applicants with an outstanding academic record or significant work experience.
