Loan periods

Standard loans are issued for 3 weeks
Week loans are issued for 7 days
Short loans are issued until next day at 11.00am using the Self-service kiosks (alternatively on Friday after 11am or on Saturday if you visit the Library Service desk during staffed hours, you can borrow these items until Monday at 11.00am)
All items in the School Experience Resources collection are issued for 6 weeks
Please note that some loan periods are extended for some categories of users (see above)

Renewals

All loanable items except short loan items can be renewed up to 50 times unless they are reserved by another borrower.

Short loan items can not be renewed. This used to be possible, however we have considerably extended the loan period and so have withdrawn renewals on these items so that others have an opportunity to use them.

You can keep track of the details and "due dates" of items on loan to you by using the "My Account" option on the library catalogue and typing in your library ticket number (ignoring the "p"). Please ask a member of staff at the Library service desk if you need help.

You can renew your items in 3 ways:

You cannot renew items that are reserved by another borrower.

We will shortly be adding a new 'Recalled item' fine rate. If you have an overdue book which is recalled, you will be charged the 'Recalled items' fine rate of 50p per day, regardless of loan type. We will advise all users when this change is implemented.

Fines and overdues

To ensure the fair circulation of items, it is necessary to charge fines for overdue items. Please note the following charges:

  • Standard loans - 20p per day (maximum £10.00 per item)
  • Week loans - 50p per day (maximum £10.00 per item)
  • Short loans - 25p per hour (maximum £10.00 per item)
  • Recalled items - 50p per day (maximum £10.00 per item) This charge is due to come in to effect soon. We will advise all users when this change is implemented.

If your total cumulated fines reach £10.00 you will be temporarily blocked from borrowing and renewing library items, until you reduce the amount of fines on your account.

We send out overdue reminders by e-mail to your Newman e-mail address. After three e-mails, if the items are still overdue, we will send you a letter. If you have items which are overdue for more than 21 days, you will be temporarily blocked from borrowing and renewing library items, until you return these items.

We also send a courtesy e-mail to advise you of library items which are almost due (except Short loans). This e-mail reminder is sent to your Newman e-mail address, two days before the item is due. However, if you do not receive such an e-mail, the responsibility for returning items on time remains with you, and you will still be liable for any overdue fines incurred.

Reservations

If you find that an item is out on loan, you can reserve the item from the Library Catalogue. Please see our Help and Guidance or ask a member of library staff for assistance.

  • You may place up to 5 reservations at any time
  • You can cancel a reservation online via the Library Catalogue or contact the Library directly
  • You will be notified that your reservation is available by an e-mail to your Newman e-mail address
  • If there is more than one reservation for a particular title, it will automatically issue as a 7 day loan
