Self-service kiosk
What is a self-service kiosk, and why should I use it?
The self-service kiosk allows you to take charge of your own library account.
You can:
• Borrow items
• Renew your loans
• Return items
• View your current loans
• Check the status of your reservations
• Pay fines
Using the self-service kiosk means you can issue books when the
Library remains open, but the Library service desk is closed –
so we have been able to extend library opening hours.
What happens if I have problems using the self-service kiosk?
If you’re unsure of what to do with the self-service kiosk, or experience any
problems, please see a member of staff at the Library service desk.
If the Library service desk is closed, please email us at library@newman.ac.uk or
call us on ext. 1208 during hours when the library is staffed.
What is the Library service desk, and where is it located?
Staff at the Library service desk can help you with queries about:
• Borrowing, renewing or returning items
• Reservations
• Fine payments
• Missing books
• And more…
It is located on Level 1 near the library entrance.
Borrowing items using the self-service kiosk
How do I borrow items on the self-service kiosk?
• Using the touch screen, press the ‘Borrow Items’ button
• Scan the barcode on your Newman University College ID card in
the small opening on the kiosk
• Place all of the items you want to borrow in the large opening
• Follow instructions given on screen
When I scan my ID card it says “Borrower not recognised”
Please visit the Library service desk, and a member of staff will try to help
you
• Either your library borrower number is not on our computer system
• Or your library borrower record may have expired
How do I borrow large items which won’t fit in the self-service kiosk opening?
Move the item about immediately in front of the large opening in the kiosk. This should allow it to be detected by the kiosk.
How long can I borrow short loan items for when using the Self-service kiosk?
If you use the Self-service kiosk to borrow your short loan items, they will always be due back at 11:00am the following day, or over the weekend until Monday at 11:00am.
When I try and issue an item it says:
'This item could not be borrowed. Please take it to the staff desk. You have a message on your borrower record'
There is a message on your library borrower record. If you visit or contact the Library service desk (email: library@newman.ac.uk or call ext. 1208), we can try to help.
When I try and issue an item it says:
'This item could not be borrowed. Please take it to the staff desk. This item cannot be self-issued'
Some items of stock cannot be placed through the RFID self-service kiosks. These
include fragile artefacts and electronic items. You will need to
issue and return these items at the Library service desk. To
renew them you will need to go to the Library service desk, contact
us by email at library@newman.ac.uk or call us on ext. 1208.
Renewing items using the self-service kiosk
How do I renew my loans on the self-service kiosk?
• Using the touch screen, press the ‘My account’ button
• Scan the barcode on your Newman University College ID card in
the small opening on the kiosk
• Press ‘Renew Items’
• Select items which you want to renew
• Press ‘renew’
• Alternatively you can press ‘renew all’
• Follow the instructions given on screen
Can I renew my books without my Newman ID card?
No, this is not possible at the self-service kiosk. If you have the items but you do not have your ID card, please visit the Library service desk, where they can renew for you.
I have just one item on my record, and I used the ‘renew all’ option. It says “No items have been selected”
The ‘renew all’ option does work for just one item. However, if the item in question is reserved, it will not select it and displays the “no items have been selected” message.
My Account - Loans using the self-service kiosk
How do I view my current loans?
• Using the touch screen, press the ‘My Account’ button
• Scan the barcode on your Newman University College ID card in
the small opening on the kiosk
• Press ‘My Account’
• Items which are currently on loan to you will be displayed. You
may need to use the arrows on the touch screen to scroll up and
down the list.
I have an item on loan, which is set as a ‘query’, but it does not display on my list of loans.
Items which are in query (for example an item which has been notified to the
library as lost), do not display on the self-service kiosk.
You can check the Library catalogue to see if this item is still
on your record, or visit or contact the Library service desk (email:
library@newman.ac.uk or
call ext. 1208) for further information.
Returning items using the self-service kiosk
How do I return items on the self-service kiosk?
• Using the touch screen, press the ‘Return Items’ button
• Place all of the items you want to return in the large opening
• Follow instructions given on screen carefully – you will be asked
to put items on the trolley or in the returns bin next to the kiosk
– so you may need to separate the items to put in two different
places
Why do I have to put some items in the returns bin, and some items on the trolley?
Please help us to help you by paying close attention to the instructions given
on screen, as to where to place your returns.
• Items which will need Library staff attention, such as reserved
items, will be sent to the returns bin next to the kiosk
• Other items are returned to the trolley, this means we can shelve
them quickly so they are available for others
Why can’t I return some items at the self-service kiosk?
Unfortunately, there are a few items which you need to return at the Library
service desk rather than the self-service kiosk, either because
they cannot be processed by the kiosk or to prevent them from being
damaged or broken. They include:
• Interlibrary loans
• Query items
• Fragile and electronic artefacts
Paying fines using the self-service kiosk
How do I pay my fines on the self-service kiosk?
• Using the touch screen, press the ‘My Account’ button
• Scan the barcode on your Newman University College ID card in
the small opening on the kiosk
• Press ‘Fines’
• Your fines will be displayed (this does not include fines for
any items which are overdue and have not yet been renewed or returned)
• Insert the required amount into the payment unit on the right-hand
side of the self-service kiosk. If available, the self-service
kiosk gives change
Can I choose which fines on my account to pay?
Unfortunately not - if only part of the total fine amount is paid, the oldest fine will be paid first.
Does the machine accept notes and coins?
Only the right-hand self-service kiosk located on Level 1 of the library accepts
notes and coins.
The other two kiosks located on levels 1 and 2 accept coins only.
Why is the self-service kiosk rejecting my £20.00 note?
The machine will reject £20.00 notes, if the change it has to give from this note is greater than £10.00. For example:
Pay fine of £8 with £20 note (Change £12) - £20 note will not be accepted
Pay fine of £12 with £20 note (Change £8) - £20 note will be accepted
I’ve paid my fine, but the self-service kiosk hasn’t given me my change
If the self-service kiosk runs out of change, you will get a receipt like this:
| Newman
University College Library Self Payment Change Due £X.XX Please take receipt to Library service desk |
Please take this receipt to the Library service desk where library staff will give you your change.
