Toussaint L’Ouverture – Military Leader/Politician – 1743-1803

Toussaint L’Ouverture led the Haitian slave revolt of 1791
He took the French and British and beat them both, he started the revolt that altermiately lead to Haition independence in 1804. Few had the guile and military cleverness possessed by Toussaint L’Ouverture.

 

Walter Sisulu – Political leader – Born 1912 – 2003

Walter Sisulu rose from being a peasant boy to become deputy president of the African National Congress and one of the foremost influences in South African Politics. He led the struggle against apartheid, and along with Mandela spent 26 years in prison.

John Archer - Mayor - 1863 - 1932

John Archer was the first person of African descent to hold civic office in London. On the 10th november 1913 he was elected mayor of Battersea. He was also the first British black person to represent his country at an international conference abroad, and the first black person to become an election agent for a constituency Labour Party.

1964-1982 - Incarcerated at Robben Island Prison off Cape Town
1982-1990 - Imprisoned at Pollsmoor Prison
February 18, 1990 - Released
1991 - Elected president of the ANC
1993 - Received Nobel Peace Prize
1994 - 1999 - President of South Africa
June 16, 1994 - Formation of Nelson Mandela Children's Fund
