Foreign Policy

There were three foreign secretaries between the years of 1815 to 1830 with Viscount Castlereagh (1812-1822), George Canning (1822-1830) and Lord Aberdeen (1827-1830) but the foriegn policy was mainly influence by the Duke of Wellington who was also the Prime Minister at the time as well.

Factors influencing Policy

  •  Britain had an extensive network of trading arrangements between the different countries in Europe and America.  Also, Brtiain had a number of colonies overseas and also at this time Britain was experiencing the 'industrial revolution'.

  • Britain is an island meant it could captialise on its commercial markets which was dependent on the foreign trade for raw materials.

  • From 1793 to 1815, Britain was constantly at war with the French and they played a role in defeating Napoleon at Waterloo.  Britain also achieve co-operation between the European countries and by 1815 it was seen as a great power.
