The Qu'ran |
The Qur'an was revealed to Muhammed (PBUH) over a period of twenty-three years
and is regarded by Muslims as the word of Allah and his final revelation to
mankind.
It was recited from memory and written down by others on a variety of materials
- clay tablets, leaves, etc. - and these were stored in the house of his wife
Ayesha. More important, however, the whole Qur'an was stored in the memories
of his followers who, like Muhammed (PBUH), could recite it off by heart. Forty
followeres- these were called the 'Revelation writers' - were assigned to record
the Qur'an. After Muhammed (PBUH) was killed in battle copies of the Qur'an
were distributed among the muslim empire. Since that time the Qur'an is unchanged.
