Edgbaston Cricket Ground

History Of Edgbaston Stadium

Edgbaston cricket ground was established in 1882 and opened in 1886 in the Edgbaston area of Birmingham. The ground is home to Warwickshire County Cricket Club and play’s host to England and international matches. The grounds major landmark is the ‘Thwaites memorial scoreboard’ which is situated on the left side of Stanley Barns stand, as the ground moved with technology there is now an electronic scoreboard opposite the special feature.

The ground was one of the six regular venues to hold the test matches from 1902 until there honour was take away from Chester-le-Street in May 2003.

Edgbaston cricket ground is said to be one of the fines venues in the country, as it has held four tests in its first 27 years. The ground has severed many historical moments such as player Brian Lara set the world record of scoring a first-class cricket score of 501 against Durham in 1994, also the 1999 Cricket World Cup semi finals and the 2005 Ashes where Australia were defeated by England.

In the 1990’s the ground underwent reconstruction of a new cricket centre and a £2million Eric Hollies stand. With this improvement it has increased the capacity of the stadium to its current seating of 22,000. The cricket centre is used to improve performance at all level, and offers a wide range of coaching including one to one and club.
