History Of Villa Park Stadium

Villa Park Stadium was built in 1897 as a home ground for the Aston Villa Football Club. The ground served several purposes in the late 1800's to the early 1900's as the pitch was built with a 24 foot wide concrete cycling track and a cinder running track so not only was the ground used for Aston Villa’s Football Club but also athletics, cycling and cricket events.

In 1922 the ground was squared off by removing the running track to allow for the stadium to increase in capacity by building Trinity road stand.

In 2001 the Trinity road stand was demolished and replaced by a larger stand that hangs over Trinity road to reduce impact on Aston Park and increase the capacity further to accommodate for an additional 4000 fans. There are now plans to increase the ground future to a capacity of 51,000.

Villa Park is said to be one of Britain’s major stadiums as it is set in the Midlands as a neutral ground and holds over 10,000 thousand more in capacity than St Andrews.

The Stadium has been a host for several international games, the first was in 1899 against England Vs Scotland, 2-1 to England. Villa Park then continued to host important Tournaments for country, in the 1966 World Cup the park hosted 3 games and for the Euro 1996 hosted 4 games.
