Art and Design

Art at Newman develops your understanding and practice of Art in a variety of contexts - creative, educational, community, commercial and personal.

The Art Department is situated in a purpose-built studio suite containing equipment fabric, painting, printing, drawing, and ceramics, which include a kiln room and a three-dimensional workshop. In addition there is a four-enlarger darkroom, capable of handling black and white and colour photography. Some computer based graphics work is also possible using PC platforms to manipulate in Adobe Photoshop, Paintshop Pro and Coreldraw. These are linked to flatbed scanners and black and white and colour printers, with further networked facilities (such as access to the Web) also available.

Creative Arts and Media students at Newman University are supported by lecturers and technicians who are accredited by Apple as Certified Professionals in Video Editing.

The department has close links with a number of partnership schools. These links allow the development of specialist school based training programmes which investigate the nature of art and its delivery within the National Curriculum.

Teaching Methods and Assessment
The department uses a range of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, studio-based practical work, museum and gallery visits, field coursework and presentations by practising artists. Assessment is by a mixture of coursework, practical and written exercises, and exhibition.

Facilities
There are specialist facilities in painting, drawing, printing, ceramics and textiles, a purpose-built darkroom, and facilities for computer image manipulation.
