‘Vinegar Tom’, by Caryl Churchill, 6-7th December 2017, Newman Drama Studio
This year’s Year 1 Drama production is ‘Vinegar Tom’, by Caryl Churchill.
The play is set in the 17th Century, a dangerous time to be a woman. It tells the story of Alice, a single mother living with her mother Joan in a small village. Alice and Joan are accused of witchcraft after falling out with their neighbours, and are then subject to investigation by the witchfinder, Packer. Churchill takes the idea that ‘witchcraft existed in the minds of its persecutors. The play uncovers and explores how and why women were vulnerable to the prejudices and superstitions of the time – and offers us an opportunity to reflect on the extent to which those same prejudices and superstitions might still be present in our own time.
‘Vinegar Tom’ is a dynamic and thought-provoking play which will be an exciting challenge for our Year 1 Drama students, and a stimulating hour of entertainment for the audience. We look forward to seeing you there.
