Drama facilities at Newman

Drama at Newman has access to excellent facilities both on and off campus.

Our major productions are performed in professional venues such as The REP Theatre, mac, Birmingham (Midlands Arts Centre) and The Crescent. In addition, our students get the chance to perform at other venues through their involvement in events organised by our partners, such as The Witches' Promise project and Capital Theatre Festival.

Our own extra-curricular activities such as the such as CADLab Monologues provide further opportunities for performance in professional and community theatre spaces.

On campus, we have an extremely well-equipped Drama Studio. This studio space seats 50 and is fitted out with excellent lighting and sound equipment. It is our 'show and share' space in which we prepare work as it gets ready for performance at other venues. It is also a space in which external groups can come and perform.

The Drama Studio opens out to a 168 seat-theatre in which larger productions can be held. This is used for a range of extra-curricular events such as performances by the Music And Drama Society (MADSOC) and by other student groups such as Dissonance. It too is a venue that can be used by visiting groups and performers.

The Drama Studio is also one of our main teaching and learning spaces for practical drama. The Studio incorporates a high quality teaching and learning space which is wireless networked and equipped with the latest teaching and learning technology. The combination of teaching and learning space and practical performance space united in one room enables students to switch quickly from learning the theories of drama to putting them into practice on the stage.

In addition to our main Drama Studio we have two additional rehearsal studios. Rehearsal Studio 1 is equipped with black out curtains and portable lighting and sound equipment. It has live relay through to the Drama Studio and it doubles as a green room during performances in the Drama Studio Theatre. It also has mirrors to facilitate the analysis of gesture and movement.

Rehearsal Studio 2 is linked to Rehearsal Studio 1 to open into an extensive rehearsal space for large-cast rehearsals. Fitted with black out curtains, lighting bars and with raked seating, Rehearsal Studio 2 provides both rehearsal space and the opportunity for small-scale intimate productions such as monologues and rehearsed readings.

In addition to these rooms a music room, three practice rooms and two other break out spaces provide opportunities for large and small group work, musical rehearsal and devised work. Newman also has a touring rig which includes lighting, flooring and sound equipment for touring purposes.
