Newman Drama department works with the following partners:

Drama at Newman is thriving and has strong links with a range of partners. Our partnerships take many forms and enhance the student experience in a variety of ways.

Experience the real world of theatre

With some partners, such as the Crescent Theatre, Blue Orange Theatre and the Midlands Arts Centre we hire their facilities so that you gain the experience of working with and in professional arts venues. These partnerships enable you to work with professional artists and to have your work seen by the general public, helping to prepare you for the real world of theatre and the arts after university. These partnerships also give you access to events and activities taking place at these venues.

Extra-curricular opportunities – from careers advice to work placements

Other partners work with us in close collaboration, offering you a wide range of extra-curricular activities and opportunities. Our partnership with the Birmingham Repertory Theatre has enabled students to take part in the REP Student Drama Festival, the Witches' Promise project at Weoley Castle and to attend careers advice workshops at The REP.

We have also teamed up with local writer and director Polly Wright, founder of The Hearth Centre ( to create a drama production based on Polly's short story 'Seagulls in Sparkhill' and performed by Newman University Drama students at the REP Theatre as part of the REP Student Drama Festival mentioned above.

Working with professional theatre groups is another important way of enriching the student experience. As well as specialist sessions delivered by professionals with particular expertise, our partnerships with companies such as Women and Theatre and Big Brum give you exceptional opportunities. Work placements with both of these organisations have offered students the chance to gain insights into running community theatre groups. Such placements are vital in enabling you to realise your potential and understand the very wide variety of career opportunities for those with a drama degree.

These partnerships also offer you other outstanding opportunities, enabling you to build up a portfolio of experience.
