Mike Gayle: How to Write a Best-Seller

On 9th November 2012, Birmingham-based author and freelance journalist Mike Gayle talked about and read from his work in a session with Year 3 students who are studying the Literary Sub-Genres module.

Mike has contributed to a number of magazines including FHM and Sunday Times Style. He was an agony uncle for Just Seventeen and Bliss before he became a best-selling novelist. Those of us with ambitions to write popular fiction found Mike’s entertaining account of the development and success of his first novel – My Legendary Girlfriend – particularly inspiring.

Here’s a summary of this novel taken from Mike’s own website:

'Meet Will Kelly. English teacher. Film fan. King of sandwich construction. Still in love with The One, desperately searching for An-Other One. In his decrepit flat, Will’s lifeline is the telephone. There’s Alice (who remembers his birthday), Simon (who doesn’t), Martina (the one-night stand), Kate (the previous tenant of his rented Archway fleapit) and of course Aggi – the inimitable Aggi. His Legendary Girlfriend. Or is she? Two men, three women and a donkey called Sandy… basically it’s your classic love hexagon.'

Mike’s 9th and latest novel is Stags and Hens. He has also written a non-fiction book The To-Do List.
