Academic Dress
Do I have to order Academic Dress?
Academic dress must be worn by all graduands receiving an undergraduate or postgraduate degree validated by either Newman University or the University of Leicester.
As the academic dress for the University of Leicester and Newman University are different, you must ensure that you order the correct academic dress from the correct validating institution. Please refer to the cover letter enclosed with your copy of the Graduation Handbook (to be sent in August 2012) to confirm the academic dress you are to order and for which validating institution.
As Newman University does not have academic dress for the Graduate and Registered Teacher Programme (GTP & RTP). Graduands are asked to wear the academic dress of the institution that conferred their previous undergraduate degree.
To prevent confusion and ensure that the correct academic dress is ordered (from the correct institution), all GTP and RTP graduands will have been provided with an order form to complete and return to request the gown of their previous undergraduate degree through Ede and Ravenscroft Limited. Please do not order your academic dress on-line or by phone, unless your undergraduate degree was validated by Newman University or the University of Leicester.
Graduands of the Certificate in Counselling Skills programme are not required to wear academic dress. You are asked to dress smartly, preferably in white shirts and black trousers or skirts.
Please note that academic dress must be worn at all times during the ceremony (excluding the mortarboard which must be carried when in the main hall) and must be returned to the Gowning Return Desk following the ceremony, unless you have requested and paid for extended hire through Ede and Ravenscroft Limited.
Which Academic Dress do I order?
Confirmation of the academic dress you are to order will be provided in bold on the cover letter enclosed with your copy of the Graduation Handbook, which will be sent in August 2012, along with confirmation of the validating institution for your award.
The academic dress for University of Leicester and Newman University is different. Therefore, you must ensure that you order the academic dress from the correct institution. How do I order Academic Dress?
Your academic dress must be pre-ordered through our robing hire company, Ede and Ravenscroft Limited, either by phone on 01223 861854 or on-line at www.edeandravenscroft.com.
The hire cost for academic dress is approximately £45.00, and orders made online will receive a £5.00 discount.
When ordering your academic dress (gown, hood and hat/cap) you will be asked to confirm the following:
Name of award achieved (i.e. MA, BSc, PGCE)
Validating institution (i.e. University of Leicester or Newman University)
Height
Hat size
Chest measurement
NB: Your hat size is determined by measuring the circumference of your head from an inch above your eyebrows to the nape of your neck, in inches or centimetres.
Please be advised that Newman University is not responsible for ordering, supplying or paying for your academic dress. Any queries on your order should be made to Ede and Ravenscroft Limited directly.
How do I pay for my Academic Dress?
You are able to pay for your academic dress by debit or credit card, or by cheque. Please allow plenty of time when ordering your academic dress regardless of your chosen method of payment. Please note that Ede and Ravenscroft Limited cannot guarantee your order if it is placed less than 21 days before the date of the ceremony, so all academic dress should be ordered by the end of September 2012.
Collecting Your Academic Dress
Once ordered, your academic dress will be available for you to collect on the day from the robing area at Symphony Hall, which will be open from 8.30am to 6.00pm. To allow your order to be processed quickly and reduce queuing time, please ensure that you bring confirmation of your order with you. This will either be sent to you if ordering by phone, or can be printed off if ordering online.
Please note that to reduce the length of queues experienced in previous years, only graduands will be permitted to enter the robing hall. Please ask your guests to wait outside the robing hall.
Photography
Ede and Ravenscroft Photography will be present at the ceremonies to provide you with the opportunity to have photographs taken of you and your guests.
You are advised to pre-order your photographs from Ede and Ravenscroft Photography at least 10 days before the date of the ceremony. These can be ordered by phone on 01223 861 854 or online at www.edeandravenscroft.com.
For details of the range of photography packages available, please refer to the Graduation Handbook. Please note that you can purchase photographs on the day, however these will be charged at higher rate than if you pre-order and pay in advance.

Certificate Framing
You also have the opportunity to purchase frames for your award certificate and graduation photographs from The Certificate Framing Company. These carry the Newman University logo and are available in a range of styles and finishes.
Your frames can be pre-ordered either online at www.certificateframing.co.uk or by phone on 01773 744479. Please note that if you enter the code ‘Newman’, when ordering online, you will receive a 10% discount on all frame prices.
You can also order your frames on the day of the Ceremonies from the Certificate Framing Company’s stall located outside the robing and photography areas in Symphony Hall. Please note that any frames ordered on the day of the Ceremonies will not receive a discount.
