Academic dress must be worn by all graduands receiving an undergraduate or postgraduate degree.  Take a look at examples of the Birmingham Newman University academic dress.

Who can attend Graduation?

Any student who has:

• Successfully completed all elements of their programme and been had their award ratified by an assessment board before 4 September 2026.
• Chosen to defer their Graduation from last year to this year’s Ceremonies. This will have been confirmed in writing.

Who can’t attend Graduation?

Any student who has:

• Any student who has not completed all elements of their course and had an award ratified before 4 September 2026.
• Chosen to accept the lesser award, after the Resit Programme Assessment Boards in August/September.
• An outstanding academic debt (fees) with Birmingham Newman University, which is not resolved by the confirmation deadline. If you are concerned, please contact Finance Office by e-mailing finance@newman.ac.uk.
• Chosen to defer their graduation until next year. If you wish to defer your Graduation you must indicate this in the Graduation Confirmation process and send a formal request in writing, detailing the grounds for your request (addressed to the Head of Assessment & Graduation)

Birmingham Newman University offers a limited, discretionary Graduation Support Fund to help students who may otherwise be unable to attend their ceremony due to financial hardship.

The fund supports costs directly related to attending graduation and is not provided as a cash payment. Support is arranged through the University’s approved suppliers and may cover items such as gown hire, up to two guest tickets, or a basic photography package.

To apply, you must:

1. Expect to be eligible to graduate following your Assessment Board;
2. Be experiencing financial difficulty affecting your ability to attend; and
3. Provide appropriate, recent supporting evidence (dated within four weeks).

Applications open in early September and close on Friday 2 October 2026. Late or incomplete applications, or those without evidence, cannot be considered. Eligibility will be confirmed at the point of assessment.
