Academic Dress

Academic dress is the name for the gown, hood and mortarboard (or ‘cap’) worn.

Academic dress must be worn by all Graduands receiving an undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

You must ensure that you order the correct academic dress for the correct validating institution.  This information can be found on the Graduation Confirmation task on mynewman.

Level 4 Certificates, Graduate Certificate awards, and QTS Assessment Only – Graduands of these programme are not required to wear academic dress.  You are asked to dress smartly, preferably in white shirt and black trousers or skirt.

Academic dress must be worn at all times during the ceremony (excluding the mortarboard, which should be carried when in the main hall) and must be returned to the Gowning Return Desk following the ceremony, unless you have requested and paid for extended hire through Ede & Ravenscroft.

How do I order Academic Dress?

Your academic dress must be pre-ordered through our robing hire company, Ede and Ravenscroft Limited, either by phone: 01223 861854 or online: www.edeandravenscroft.com.

The hire cost for undergraduate academic dress is approximately £45.00.

When ordering your academic dress (gown, hood and hat/cap) you will be asked to confirm the following:

Name of award achieved (i.e. MA, BSc, PGCE)
Validating institution (i.e. Newman University)
Height
Hat size
Chest measurement

NB: Your hat size is determined by measuring the circumference of your head from an inch above your eyebrows to the nape of your neck, in inches or centimetres.

Newman University is not responsible for ordering, supplying or paying for your academic dress. Any queries on your order should be made to Ede and Ravenscroft Limited directly.

 

How do I pay for my Academic Dress?

You are able to pay for your academic dress by debit or credit card, or by cheque. Please allow plenty of time when ordering your academic dress regardless of your chosen method of payment. Ede and Ravenscroft Limited cannot guarantee your order if it is placed less than 21 days before the date of the ceremony, so all academic dress should be ordered, at least, by the end of September.

Collecting Your Academic Dress

Once ordered, your academic dress will be available for you to collect on the day from the robing area at Symphony Hall, which will be open from 8.30am to 6.00pm. To allow your order to be processed quickly and reduce queuing time, please ensure that you bring confirmation of your order with you. This will either be sent to you if ordering by phone, or can be printed off if ordering online.

To reduce the length of queues, only graduands will be permitted to enter the robing hall.

Photography

Ede and Ravenscroft Photography will be present at the ceremonies to provide you with the opportunity to have photographs taken of you and your guests.

You are advised to pre-order your photographs from Ede and Ravenscroft Photography at least 10 days before the date of the ceremony. These can be ordered by phone: 01223 861 854 or online: www.edeandravenscroft.com.

For details of the range of photography packages available, please see Ede & Ravenscroft’s website.  You can purchase photographs on the day, however these will be charged at higher rate than if you pre-order and pay in advance.

In the case of an emergency or force majeure, events associated with the student lifecycle i.e. graduation ceremonies may need to be cancelled.
