Visitors and Alumni

The main purpose of the Library is to support the current staff and students of Newman University. We are happy to provide limited support for broader groups from the local community and from the academic community at large, but only where this does not cause difficulties for this main purpose.

If you would like to use Newman Library, there are a number of options available:

Register as an External Borrower

You can apply to become a member of the Library for up to a year, which you can renew as required. This entitles you to borrow up to 6 items at any given time. You will not be able to access any open access computers or Newman network facilities, although you should be able to access our Guest Wi-Fi when you are in the Library.

Please click here for Terms and Conditions for External Borrowers

All Applications are subject to approval.

The fees are as follows:

Standard membership charge:

  • £50.00 per annum
  • £25.00 for 6 months
  • £10.00 for 3 months trial period

Concessionary membership for former Newman staff and alumni:

  • £12.50 for 6 months

Partnership Schools
One member of teaching staff from each Partnership school may join free of charge, please contact the Library in advance so that we can make the necessary checks before your visit.

You will need to complete a registration form and arrange a time to visit Newman to be photographed for an ID card. Contact Newman Library to arrange your visit either by e-mail or telephone.

Once you have joined the Library and have an ID card, you will be able to visit at any time during Library opening hours. If you have a temporary card you are advised to visit during staffed hours. Please click here for opening hours.

Prospective Newman Students

If you live locally, you are welcome to start using Newman’s Library to read and prepare for the start of your course once your place is confirmed. You won’t be able to make use of our online resources, eBooks and eJournals until you’ve enrolled as a student, but you are welcome to use all of our printed resources, books and journals and to study in the Library during staffed hours:

  • If you would like to study in the Library and use our printed resources within the Library only, you are welcome to do so at any time during staffed opening hours free of charge
  • If you would like to borrow books from the Library to take home, you can join the Library as an External Member for 3 months for a fee of £10.00. This allows you to borrow up to 6 items at a time.

We know that starting a course at university can be a little daunting, so don’t forget that the Library staff will be happy to help you find resources or to find your way around the Library – simply ask for help, and explain that you’ll be starting a course at Newman soon. We’ll try to help you to find any items that have been recommended by your lecturers, or to offer advice on purchasing any textbooks or readers that you’ve been advised to buy. You are welcome to use the different spaces within the Library in the way that suits you best: we have over 400 study spaces across our Silent, Quiet and Learning Zones.

You are welcome to contact the Library if you would like any further information before the start of your course.

SCONUL Access Scheme

You will need to register at your own institution’s library first to join under the SCONUL Access scheme. Depending on what type of course you are on or whether you are a member of staff, you can use the Library for reference access and may be entitled to borrow library materials. We accept borrowers in all SCONUL Access bands - A, B, C and R. You must bring the library card from your own institution as well as your SCONUL Access card. You will not be able to access any Library PCs or Newman network facilities.

You will usually be able to gain access to the Library when the Library is staffed and Newman's main reception are open. Occasionally, due to unforeseen circumstances it is necessary to amend these hours at short notice, so it is recommended that you call the Library on the day of your visit to check access for that day.
