MAGPI Project

LGMF Project 073: Improving the Quality, Use and Impact of Management Information in distinctive and specialist HEIs.
The aim of this research was to improve the institutional performance and governor effectiveness of HEIs with distinctive missions through the development and use of appropriate performance indicators.

This was a three year project, funded by the HEFCE LGM (Leadership, Governance and Management) Fund and has looked at the development of potential performance indicators in collaboration with distinctive and specialist HEIs. These included Church foundations as well as Art & Design, Drama, Music, Medical and Land-based institutions.

It was intended to assist HEIs in the development of appropriate performance indicators which support, sustain and develop the individual missions of universities and colleges.

In addition the project aimed to provide training materials for governors to interpret and understand KPIs, in particular issues associated with distinctiveness.

The project report was completed in July 2009 and details the work undertaken by the project and also outlines the possible use of a distinctiveness KPI, made up of performance ‘strands’.

This report is complemented by the Training Materials, a separate companion volume that provides a series of exercises for governors, alongside examples of current practice in the areas of KPIs and distinctiveness.
