Media and Communication at Newman is a contemporary subject that combines production and creativity with theory and analysis, giving students a range of valuable skills for digital culture in the 21st century.
Media students take part in seminars and workshops, research activities and a range of projects including film production, animation, online enquiry-based learning, virtual world studies, game design and web design. Using portable Macbooks with industry specification software, students can opt for a more practical route through their courses or for a more academic, reflective approach, looking at media in contemporary culture, media and power, specific media forms (eg Film Studies) and ways in which human identity is partly shaped by digital media experience.
Media students are taught by highly skilled practitioners alongside published academics with profiles in the fields of media literacy, videogames, creativity and media education. Media at Newman is mac-based, making use of a variety of industry standard software and wireless connectivity.
Teaching Methods and Assessment
The department uses a range of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, practical work, visits, online and virtual world learning activities and tutorials. Assessment is by a mixture of practical coursework, essays and presentations.
