Newman University launches innovative Foundation Year course

Updated on: 11/08/2017

Newman University in Bartley Green, Birmingham has re-launched its existing social science degrees to include a brand new integrated, pre-degree Foundation Year.

The Foundation Year is designed to give students the understanding of education, society and the social sciences alongside consideration of their own educational journey, to effectively prepare them for degree level study.

These courses are open to not only those who have not achieved the required grades through formal qualifications but also to those with considerable work and life experience of a complexity that demonstrates an aptitude to study at degree level, giving individuals a chance to continue their education and gain the necessary experience to progress within their career.

Newman University provides a unique teaching style when compared to other universities; rather than in a large lecture theatre, teaching usually takes place in smaller groups where student interaction is actively encouraged, giving students the opportunity to improve their research and analysis skills, learn to interpret existing knowledge and form new conclusions and ideas of their own.

The Foundation Year is no different and will follow the teaching structure that Newman is well-known for, providing students with a supportive learning environment with the aims of developing their confidence, intellectual curiosity and the ability to work as a member of a team.

Successfully completing this year, allows students to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to progress on to multiple degree level courses including Counselling Studies, Working with Children, Young People and Families, Youth and Community Work, Psychology, Applied Social Science, Criminology, Health and Social Care, Sport and Education and Sports and Exercise Studies.

Modules include Studentship, Education and Society, Foundations of Social Sciences, Understanding and Exploring Society and a final research project.

Dr Mike Seal, Head of Criminology and Youth and Community Studies at the university commented "The new Foundation Year course gives those aspiring for a career in the Social Sciences industry a great opportunity to begin their journey towards earning a degree. The course acts as a stepping stone for students who may not have necessarily achieved the grades to gain a place on an undergraduate degree programme but would still like to continue their education.

"Newman University is consistently looking for innovative ways to be able to be inclusive of our community and offer programmes to a wide variety of students and undertaking degrees with a foundation year is an excellent way to do exactly that."
