Newman opens doors to aspiring teachers

Updated on: 26/09/2017

As part of Newman University’s commitment to widening participating and supporting the drive to recruit teachers to the profession as a whole, the university will be opening its doors to all aspiring teachers to offer free support sessions focusing on the skills tests.

Many institutions will only offer advice and support to those who have already applied to a course, however, Newman University understands the need to give individuals guidance before they begin their academic journey.

All applicants who wish to complete their teacher training course are required to pass literacy and numeracy professional skills tests. The tests are carried out to ensure that individuals have the expertise to meet their professional responsibilities; the numeracy and literacy tests cover the core skills that teachers need to fulfil their wider professional role in schools, rather than the subject knowledge required for teaching.

Newman University offers free support sessions for teacher training applicants in preparing for the national professional tests in literacy and numeracy. The sessions are delivered by expert tutors who will cover key areas of knowledge alongside test techniques. The tutors have experience of developing confidence through targeted revision and clear explanation of the tests.
