Year 11 and 12 students from Shenley Academy had the opportunity to meet and work with best-selling authors and screenwriters at a special event to encourage students to consider continuing into higher education (HE).
The event was hosted by Newman University College Birmingham in conjunction with the National Academy of Writing as part of its work to widen participation in HE.
Twenty-three students took part in the day-long event, which included a workshop with award-winning thriller writer Ken Follet, advice on improving their writing skills from writer and editor Jackie Gay, tips on getting their work published from journalist Barry Turner and even advice on adapting their work for the big screen from screenwriter Andy Conway.
Tina Wilkinson, Aimhigher Manager at Newman University College, said: “I’m delighted these students were able to take part in the event and am grateful to the National Academy of Writing for their support in making it happen.
“The purpose of the Aimhigher programme is to remove some of the mystique surrounding both HE and students’ career options. We hope that by meeting and working with the real people behind the credits, the students will be inspired to pursue their dreams and realise that they too can achieve real success.”
