Newman offers a free taste of Higher Education

Published on: 01/02/2010

Newman University College has secured funding from the Working Neighbourhoods Fund (WNF), which will enable us to offer free places on some modules to Birmingham residents.

WNF funds councils and communities to help local people enter higher education or enhance their professional knowledge. Anyone of working age is eligible, although the focus is particularly on those at risk of redundancy. Newman will be a delivery partner in the Lifelong Learning Network’s project ‘Local Communities, Higher Skills’, recognised by Be Birmingham as worthy of support. The project will enable 52 beneficiaries to join a module on a Foundation Degree, or take part in a module specially delivered for this purpose. In addition, there is scope for Newman to accredit an employer’s own training course at Level 4 or above.

Mandy Heard, Business Development Manager at Newman, said: “This is an opportunity for Birmingham people to experience higher level study, benefiting from the teaching and learning that is involved and assessing their potential as a university student. Those selected can choose from a number of modules on some of our work-based Foundation Degree courses, with a view to improving their academic and vocational skills or addressing employment needs. Participants who complete the unit of study will receive a certificate stating the number of credits they have earned. These can be put towards a complete course if, as we hope, they decide to progress into higher education.”

Modules are available in a wide range of areas including Leadership and Management, Social Care, Early Years, Youth Work and IT. The only entry requirement is that applicants must be able to work to level four standards, as demonstrated by existing qualifications or through work experience.

Let Newman help you remain competitive during these challenging times!
