Flexible Learning Undergraduate Degrees

Newman has developed a range of flexible learning undergraduate degrees which take as little as one extra year to complete compared to a full-time undergraduate degree. Students studying flexibly can make significant savings compared to the total cost of a full-time degree. The flexible learning courses have been divided into 3 categories:

Single honours - (100% one subject)

Combined honours - (50% each of two subjects)

Professional programmes - Single or combined studies designed to lead to a specific career, such as Business and I.T. or preparation for a career in teaching (note the courses designed to prepare applicants for a career in teaching do not confer Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and progression on to a PGCE to gain QTS is not guaranteed).

How do flexible learning degree courses work?
As a flexible learning student, you choose how many modules to study each year (up to a maximum of 6). To qualify for a student tuition fee loan (see below) you will need to choose at least 4 modules. A normal 3 year degree will take 4 years to complete if you take 6 modules per year and 6 years to complete if you take 4 modules per year.

When will I be taught?
You will be taught alongside full-time students, usually between 9.15am-6pm (these courses are not normally taught during the evening). You will normally be required to attend for between 2-2.5 days per week and are able to access the same support, resources and extra-curricular activities (such as sports teams and societies) as full-time students.

What are the entry requirements?
Entry requirements for flexible learning courses are the same as for full-time courses. You will need a minimum of 280 UCAS points, including at least two A2 Levels at minimum grades of C or equivalent; or Distinction Merit Merit at BTEC. If you have completed an Access Diploma, you will need to have achieved at least 39 units with Merit or Distinction. Entry requirements differ by course so please refer to individual course pages for specific requirements. For alternative qualifications please see our entry requirements page.

How much will it cost and what funding is available?
From 2012, as a flexible learning student, you will be able to access tuition fee loans for the full cost of your degree, but will not be able to access maintenance loans. Tuition fees for flexible learning courses cost £4,500 per year (from 2012) for a 4-year course, saving over £7,000 on the total cost of a full-time degree. Studying flexibly also enables you to minimise the loans required to study and contribute to your living costs by working longer hours than full-time students.
