The Graduate School is central to Newman University’s activities and is charged with:

  • Promoting high quality research and postgraduate education on campus and through distance learning
  • Disseminating and promoting best practice in all areas of postgraduate education
  • Monitoring and reviewing postgraduate research programmes to ensure high completion rates for research students
  • Ensuring the University makes suitable provision for postgraduate students in terms of academic and pastoral accommodation.

Organization and Leadership

The Graduate School is led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Research and Scholarship.

They work with members of the Research Committee and other colleagues across the University to develop and implement the University’s research strategy as well as promoting and delivering academic and support services for postgraduate research students. Additionally, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Research and Scholarship provides the main contact point between the University and relevant external bodies such as GuildHE, CREST, MURG, etc.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Research and Scholarship is supported by the Postgraduate Research Coordinator, who assists in formulating and implementing policies and procedures relating to postgraduate research students as well as monitoring their progress in line with the validating partner institution’s regulations and codes of practice.

The Research Office Administrator provides administrative support for the School’s day-to-day activities, including maintenance of student records for continuing postgraduate research students, processing Research Ethics applications, applications for funding to present at conferences and Research Excellence Framework related funding.

  • Newman Humanities Research Centre
  • Newman Research Centre for the Bible and its Reception
  • NILE – Newman Institute of Leadership in Education
  • Sport, Physical Activity and Health Research Centre

3. The Research Excellence Framework Units of Assessment:

  • Education
  • English Language and Literature
  • History
  • Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience
  • Social Work and Social Policy
  • Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism
  • Theology and Religious Studies

The Graduate School’s main functions include preparation and submissions of research outputs to the Research Excellence Framework and to manage the staff research seminars and workshops.
