Having studied Theology a both undergraduate and postgraduate level at the University of Cambridge, specialising in Biblical Studies and Second Temple Judaism, Susan Docherty undertook her PhD on the use of the Old Testament in Hebrews at the University of Manchester, under the supervision of Professor Philip Alexander. Her main research interests are in early Jewish and early Christian biblical interpretation. She was made Reader in Biblical Studies in January 2013 and then appointed Professor in New Testament and Early Judaism in 2015. She was awarded the William Barclay Distinguished Research Fellowship in Biblical Studies at Trinity College Glasgow for 2016.  Susan is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and has held a number of external examiner positions for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Biblical Studies and Christian theology, including at the Universities of Wales, Cumbria and St Patrick's Pontifical University in Maynooth, Ireland.
