Biography

Dr Elizabeth-Jane Burnett is a poet and academic with a specialism in contemporary innovative writing. She holds a BA (Hons) from St. Peter’s College, Oxford and an MA and PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and is active in practice-led research and research impact. Her poetry is widely anthologised and featured in Dear World and Everyone In It (Bloodaxe, 2013), a collection of the UK’s "most talented and interesting poets" and Out of Everywhere 2: Linguistically Innovative Poetry by Women in North America and the UK (Reality Street, 2015).

Research Interests

She is currently working on A Dictionary of the Soil, longlisted for The Leslie Scalapino Award for Innovative Woman Playwrights. She is supervising a life writing PhD project. A full poetry collection on wild swimming is forthcoming. She has received funding from bodies such as Arts Council and Heritage Lottery.

Current Teaching

She is Programme Leader for English & Creative Writing and Module Leader for all Creative Writing modules. She draws on experiential learning to encourage capability-driven, intrinsically motivated lifelong learning. She has collaborated with students on a Student Academic Partnership Project (2016) and supervises dissertations, including doctoral theses in Creative Writing.

Current Administrative Duties

She has had a key role in curriculum development and pedagogical shaping on Newman’s single honours Creative Writing and English & Creative Writing programmes. As Programme Leader she shapes decisions regarding recruitment and curriculum, and as Personal Tutor she provides pastoral care. She is on Newman’s Equality & Diversity Committee.

She is a member of the Association for Learning Technology (ALT); Association for Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE); Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA); member of the Contemporary Performance Network; and of Live Art Development.
