Mike has worked in the fields of youth and community work and homelessness for over 25 years. He has previously taught at the YMCA George Williams College, Kelloggs College, Oxford and the Open University. He has conducted over 25 piece of research and 20 pieces of consultancy work. He has over 30 publications and has spoken at over 80 conferences. He is the author of seven books, his latest being Trade Union Education: Transforming the World (2017). He was elected to the Royal Society of the Arts in recognition of his work within the homeless field in 2009.

Research Interests

Mike has secured over £1million of HEA, Lottery and EU funding, run 6 Student-as-Partner Projects, is co-convenor of BERA’s Sexualities SIG and is on the editorial boards for the International Journal of Open Youth Work and New Internationalist. Research interests: Queer and Critical Pedagogy, Participatory Research, Homelessness and Community Organising.

Current Teaching

Mike won the Newman Distinguished Teaching Fellowship in 2016 and has been nominated twice for the HEA National Teaching Fellowship and was nominated for Times Higher ‘outstanding contribution to the community’ award 2015. He teaches on all the courses he is programme director for.

Current Administrative Duties

He is Programme Director for the Youth and Community Work Programmes, the Foundation Year in Social Sciences, the Certificate in Community Leadership and a post graduate programme in trade Union Education. He was programme director for Criminology between September 2016-2017. Has Been external examiner at five institutions.
