Biography

Dr Persephone Sextou holds a BA (Hons) in Education Studies (University of Ioannina, Greece), a Master of Arts in Contemporary Theatre Practice (Lancaster University) and a PhD in Drama and Theatre Education (Goldsmiths College, University of London). She has taught for the Departments of Drama and Education in Higher Education in Greece since 1996 and introduced Theatre Education programmes for the National Theatre of Northern Greece, Museums, Community, Art and School Organisations. She is the author of three monographs on School Drama, Theatre-in-Education and Applied theatre projects. She joined Newman University College in 2009.

Research Interests

Her research covers the area of Applied Drama: Theatre in Health and Wellbeing; Community Drama; Theatre pedagogy; and Drama and Creativity. Her theatre work has been approved and funded by the Hellenic Ministries of Education and of Culture, the Ministry of the Public Sector and Social Affairs, and the Greek Lottery.

Teaching

She is the module leader of undergraduate modules (levels 2, 3, 4) and teaches Theatre-in-Education, Community Drama, Shakespeare and Society, a double Production Project and American drama.

Administrative Responsibilities

She is the Ethics Link Tutor for Drama and represents the School of Social Science and Humanities on the Research Ethics Committee. She is responsible for the organisation of the annual Research Conferences on Drama Dissertations. She is a member of the editorial board of Critical Commentary.

Membership of Professional Organisations

She is a reviewer in Education and Theatre Journal. Memberships: IUTA (International Universities Theatre Association); Applied Arts & Health Network for Researchers and Practitioners; Hellenic Theatre Education Network (IDEA).
