Over the past few years, Newman University has pursued a strategy which places a stronger emphasis on research through the construction of a robust and inclusive research culture. The research mission of Newman is to continue to broaden the base of research active staff across all areas of academic activity and to support scholarship through the development of a supportive environment.
Strong research culture
Newman University is developing a strong research culture and offers opportunities for research at postgraduate level. We offer a range of intellectually challenging taught postgraduate courses leading to the award of MA or MSc. Our research students study towards the award of MPhil or PhD, full or part-time, in a supportive research environment tailored to their needs.
The growing research culture at Newman University was recognised through the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, a national audit measuring research excellence across the UK’s university sector. The RAE results indicated that all research outputs from the University were of national or international standards in terms of originality, significance and rigour, with some outputs being classified as internationally excellent. These results indicated that research groups and individuals across a number of disciplines are engaged in research that is comparable with more established research centres.
Postgraduate research supervision
Newman’s postgraduate research students work towards MPhil or PhD degrees that are awarded by the University of Leicester. Our members of staff have the expertise to provide supervision towards doctorate level qualifications (PhD and EdD) in a number of subject areas. Normally, the research proposal is negotiated by the candidate with a member of the research supervisory team. Research students receive a level of support not commonly available in larger and less community-based institutions.
The research strategy at Newman aims to promote research and scholarly activities across all schools and subject areas, enhancing the quality and volume of research and encouraging knowledge transfer into the community. This strategy encourages partnership and collaborative research with fellow academics and public and voluntary services on a range of issues including health, education and community and professional development.
