Student Associates Scheme

The Student Associates Scheme, (SAS), is a Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) initiative, provided by Newman University College.  It operates throughout the school year.

AIMS

  • To encourage current students to consider teaching as a possible career
  • To help encourage young people to raise their aspirations and enter higher education
  • To support schools by providing student assistance

BENEFITS TO YOU

The SAS provides 15 hours of training and 15-day placements in schools. As a Student Associate you are given the opportunity to:

  • Gain a real feel of teaching and learning
  • Fit your training and placement around your study timetable
  • Provide a useful service to a school of your choice *
  • Learn more about future teacher-training
  • Enhance your CV
  • Earn £600 on full, satisfactory completion of the Scheme

* Schools must be within Birmingham, Coventry or Leicester, or in close proximity to these areas.

ELIGIBILITY

You are welcome to apply if you are currently a student at degree level or above.  Unfortunately, we cannot accept students who have previously started a course leading to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

For the 2010-11 academic year, we have places available in the following secondary school subjects only:

  • Chemistry
  • Maths
  • Physics
  • Design Technology
  • IT/ICT

Your course must contain a strong element of one of the above subjects.  You may also be eligible if you have A-Levels at grade A-C in Chemistry, Maths or Physics.

There are also a very small number of places for 'Men Into Primary' available.  Applicants for these places must be male, but can be studying any higher education subject.

Once recruited, all Student Associates are required to apply for a new CRB Enhanced Disclosure via Newman University College to be eligible to start their placement.

APPLICATION

Training and placements are available between September 2010 and June 2011.  Recruitment is ongoing throughout the academic year and you can apply for the Scheme at any time from now until March 2011 by downloading an application form.  If successful, you will be invited to one of our periodic introductory meetings.

If you have any queries, please contact the SAS Office.
