History of Islamic Art

Decorative arch way to a mosque

Islamic art is mainly expressed through decorative art. Even though the art can be found in various countries of the world it has some common features. These common features were found due the Islamic Empire. Various artists such as Turks, Persians, Spaniards, Africans, Egyptian and Indians came together to produce elaborate work such as geometrical patterns and calligraphy.

Islamic art soon became known for its wood work, crafts, textiles, calligraphy, metal work and ceramics. The other reason for common features in the art around the muslim world was because the calligraphy written in Arabic from the Quran was accessible and understandable to all regardless of their country or language. This is because this is the language of the Quran.
