Birmingham Newman University Library recognised as THE Award finalist for pioneering AI support

04/09/2025 by James Keyes

Forward-thinking work to support the responsible and innovative use of AI in academia has landed Birmingham Newman University’s Library Team a place as a finalist for the Times Higher Education Awards (THE). This is the second time in three years that the team has been nationally recognised by being shortlisted for Outstanding Library of the Year.

This year, Birmingham Newman’s entry “Empowering academic excellence through generative AI support” showcases the library’s pioneering work in guiding students and staff through the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.

In September 2023, the team launched the university’s first dedicated AI microsite, offering clear and accessible resources on AI ethics, research applications, citation practices, and academic support. The site has quickly become a go-to resource for AI guidance and digital literacy.

The library also introduced interactive AI workshops, blending hands-on experience with ethical debate. These sessions were so well received that they were integrated into teaching across disciplines, including Theology, English, Psychology, and Education. 100% of attendees rated the workshops as “Really useful”.

The initiative has not only influenced university-wide policy but also positioned the library as a leader in responsible AI engagement.

Chris Porter, Director of Library and Learning Services at Birmingham Newman University, said: “We are thrilled and honoured to have been shortlisted for this prestigious award. Here at Birmingham Newman, we always try to go the extra mile in engaging our students with the skills and understanding they need to thrive.  The Library Team’s proactive work in anticipating the academic use of AI laid the foundations for the University’s developing agenda, and it is a huge honour to be recognised for this important work.”

The announcement follows consistently high student satisfaction with library services at Birmingham Newman, including a 92.4% satisfaction score in the 2025 National Student Survey.
