Our Welfare Adviser can offer information, advice and guidance on eligibility for student funding, eligibility and access to benefits, issues relating to the interaction between student funding and benefits and can assist with searches for charitable grants. They can also offer advice on budgeting and money management and can advise you on the financial support available from the University.

We take a very rounded approach to mental health support, and we understand that many people experience challenges with their emotional wellbeing, whether they have a diagnosed condition or whether they are experiencing a difficult personal circumstance. We can support students who are simply having a bad week to students with complex needs requiring in depth support.

We have a Mental Health Advisor and a Counsellor and work with several caring and expert partners and so if you are struggling with an issue, please do make contact and we’ll arrange a chat. We will also have workshops, events and campaigns to look out for across the year.

Learning Development Tutors are here to help you to reach your full potential with guidance about improving study skills, such as essay planning, time management or critical analysis. Academic Support Advisers can advise about what to do if something beyond your control affects your ability to study and meet coursework submission deadlines.

Available to you during and after your studies, the Careers team offer advice on various aspects of career planning, employability skills and work-related learning. The Careers team can also assist with volunteering, finding work experience and jobs during and after your studies.

For students who have a physical or sensory disability, long-term health conditions, autism, mental health issues or specific learning difficulties, or care for someone with a disability or illness.

The team can offer advice on reasonable adjustments, extra time for exams andother adjustments, funding (such as DSA – Disabled Students’ Allowances) and one-to-one dyslexia tuition or mentoring for mental h ealth or autism. We also offer screening and assessment for specific learning difficulties, post-enrolment.

Offering advice and support on a number of matters including money management, dealing with debt, financial support, welfare benefits and tax credits and housing rights. The Welfare Adviser can also help you access support for personal issues including alcohol and substance misuse, sexual health, domestic violence and any other issue you may be concerned about.

Our Welfare Adviser offers pre-induction meetings to assist with the transition into university life and can arrange access to other support services. You can also have access to accommodation year-round as well as specialist student support.

If you are a single parent, a student couple with dependent children, our Welfare Adviser offers advice and guidance about support which you may be entitled to.

Newman is committed to providing support for all students and is an inclusive community regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Newman has an LGBTQ+ society run through the Students’ Union which aims to raise awareness, support relevant campaigns and offer support to its members. Student Services are also on hand should you wish to discuss any confidential matters with us.

If you have any concerns about the well-being or safety of a fellow student, you can come and share those concerns with Student Services. We will not always be able to share much information in return due to our confidentiality responsibilities, however your information could really help us put support in place for an individual – if you’re not sure better to ask than not to say anything.

We are based over the bridge across the Atrium (stand by Starbucks and look up!), and you can access us via the first floor of the Library. We guarantee to be open 10-4 Monday to Friday, although there are often team members around from 9 and up until 5.
