Taimur Sharif

Biography

Taimur is the Head of Business in the Faculty of Arts, Society & Professional Studies. He is a Certified Management and Business Educator (CMBE) of the Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS), UK; a Senior Fellow of the Advance HE (formerly, HEA), UK; a Chartered Manager FCMI of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI), UK and a Chartered Manager of the Chartered Institute of Managerment (CIM), Canada. Taimur studied for his first two degrees in Economics (BA Honours and MA) at Aligarh Muslim University, India. He later completed MSc in Economic Quantitative Methods at Stockholm University, Sweden and PhD in International Business and Economics at London South Bank University, UK. Taimur has a PGCE from the University of Sussex, UK and a PGC in Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education from Stanford University, USA. Before moving to Newman in August 2019, Taimur was the Director of the Faculty of Business & Management at Muscat University – a leading HEI in Oman that operates in conjunctions with Aston and Cranfield universities from the UK. Prior to this, he served as the Dean of the Faculty of Business at Alhosn University in Abu Dhabi – the capital of the UAE. He was a Visiting Professor in the MBA and MEd programmes at Murdoch University of Australia’s Dubai campus. A Bangladeshi by origin, Taimur settled in the UK with his wife under the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP) in September 2004 and had served in both FE and HE sectors for eight years before moving to the Gulf region for international exposure. In the UK, he worked at Central Sussex College, Stanmore College and London South Bank University during 2004-2011. He was an elected member of the Local Community Board – Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill areas.

Taimur has a wide global network of HE professionals. He sits in a number of journal editorial boards, reviews research papers for leading journals and conferences of AIB, BAM, ANZIBA, ANZAM, etc.; plays global external roles in PhD/DBA committees, academic programmes, and so on. He’s been an enlisted member of the Externals for the Oman Academic Accreditation Authority (OAAA). Taimur is currently an External Examiner at Leeds Beckett University, UK for the BA Business Management programme and the University of East London, UK for the BA dual degree programme in Islamic Finance with MAHSA University, Malaysia. In Oman, he was a member of the SME Committee of the Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI) and a member of the AIESEC-Oman National Board of Advisory. In the UAE, Taimur was a nationally recognised promoter of Entrepreneurship education, widely known for his innovative T&L site – www.iees-uae.com – which he presented in the Prime Minister’s Office in June 2016, on special invitation from the UAE Ministry of Education (MOE). Taimur received Vice Chancellor Award for professional achievements at Newman University in 2020, at Alhosn University in 2013 and 2014 as well as commendations from the external review team of the UAE-MOE in 2017. Very recently, he acted as an International Juror in the ISB Talent Event at HAN University of Applied Sciences, The Netherlands, June 2021. Taimur delivers webinars and guest lectures to international audiences on blended T&L, assessments and student engagements.

Profile

Research Interests 

Taimur is interested in international business, economics and finance areas of research. His research works that have been published in peer-reviewed journals and presented in international conferences covered a wide range of topics such as sustainable development, Islamic finance, mediating roles of FDI, HDI and trade in economic growth-environment nexus, logistics management, among others. Taimur presented keynote papers and received Best Paper Award in international conferences in Geneva and Kuala Lampur, and in Dubai respectively. His recent papers have been published in ABS/ABDC-listed journals such as Applied Economics Quarterly, International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, Industry and Higher Education, New Zealand Journal of Applied Business Research, among others.

Currently, Taimur is working on a collaborative research project on “Value Co-Creations and Brand Loyalty in Oman”, block funded by The Research Council of Oman. Also, some of his research papers on Islamic finance, sustainable development, external market orientation of banks, etc. are in the review stage of leading professional journals of ABS/ABDC.

Teaching 

Taimur is currently a Principal Lecturer. He has taught and module led Strategic Management, International Business, Leadership and Change Management, Economics of Globalisation, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Research Methodology, People Management, among others. He has supervised research projects in the BBA, MBA, MEd and Phd programmes. Very recently, he has been approved to be a Member of the Supervisory team of Liverpool Hope University, partner HEI of Newman University for doctoral degrees. Taimur has profound background in developing and facilitating decolonising and decarbonising as well as employability-focused and student-centred curriculums in the UK and abroad.

Taimur is currently the Head of Business that covers Accounting and Finance, Business and Management, and Mathematics subject areas. He is a member of the Mitigating Circumstances Board. He also heads a number of committees.
