Emily Hicks – Master’s in Humanities (Drama)
“My name is Emily, I’m 21 and I’m currently studying Masters Humanities in Drama. I also completed my undergraduate course at Newman, so once I graduate at the end of this year I will have been here for 4 years total.
As with many people, the pandemic ruined my plans. I intended to take a year away from education, and then complete my masters in 2021/2022. My plans changed due to the pandemic and I wanted to do something productive with my time, but thought I had left it too late. I applied to Newman through clearing, because I already has a great relationship with the lecturers built through my undergrad experience, and knew Newman would be able to teach well through the pandemic.
The careers team were extremely helpful. I didn’t realise that clearing was an option for masters courses. The careers team at Newman guided me through every step of the application process. They encouraged me to apply, and even helped me in writing my application. Without them, I wouldn’t have applied.
I am happy with my choice to return to Newman for my Master’s course because it’s been an overall positive experience despite the course being completed in the middle of a pandemic. The lecturers have been really supportive and understanding. They have understood the challenges of the pandemic, and how this may effect the way we have worked. Any issues have been addressed and overcome quickly.
If I were to give any advice to anyone through the clearing process it would be to not worry about it being ‘too late’. I was accepted two weeks before the course started, and it was the best choice I made the whole of 2020. However, I would also say, try not to leave it as late as me! If you are thinking about going through clearing to join Newman, try and do it as soon as possible! Newman is an excellent choice, and the community is wonderful.”
