Course Aim

The aim of the professional pathway in psychotherapy at Newman is to facilitate students’ academic and practical professional development as part of the requirements for professional registration in psychotherapy, in order to be able to practice as Psychotherapists in a range of public, private and voluntary sector contexts nationally. Building upon the MSc Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies, the Advanced Diploma aims to enable students to work with the depth and complexity needed for achieving the status of UKCP registered psychotherapist.

The Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapy Studies aims to support graduates:

  1. Able to employ critical thinking and advanced scholarship in assessing client needs, identifying appropriate interventions and monitoring treatment outcomes
  2. Skilled in the delivery of psychotherapeutic interventions to nationally articulated standards of competence for the profession
  3. Able to demonstrate personal qualities of kindness; tolerance to ambiguity, conflict, intimacy and differences; and reflective self-awareness
  4. Cognisant of the current state of the art in psychotherapy, and committed to ongoing professional development and keeping their knowledge base up-to-date
  5. Aware of and equipped to avail themselves of existing employment opportunities across the sector.

The Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapy Studies (and associated Certificate in Professional Practice, which is mandatory for Advanced Diploma students) offers 1 year of professional study psychotherapy which, combined with the MSc Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy studies, meets the taught component requirements for professional registration with UKCP in psychotherapy.

The programme (Advanced Diploma) consists of 60 credits at level 7. All modules are mandatory.

Teaching (lectures, seminars, tutorials) will be delivered by Senior Lecturers, Lecturers, Visiting Lecturers and Skills Support Tutors. They have extensive experience in a range of subject areas offered within this course. The programme is coordinated by the programme leader (Faisal Mahmood) responsible for the overall professional programme. Teaching staff who take responsibility for individual modules are referred to as Module Leaders. In addition, every student is allocated a personal tutor. Here in Counselling & Psychotherapy subject area, we currently have a large team of lecturing staff. All staff are registered/accredited members of UKCP, BACP or BPS.

Students are required to attend university for taught sessions one day a week. You are also required to come to university at other times, for example, for tutorials, other meetings and to use the library. Students are also entitled to at least one personal tutorial per semester.

A minimum of 80% attendance per module is required. Failure to meet this requirement for any reason will result in the student being awarded a ‘fail’ mark. The module will then need to be retaken. Only in exceptional circumstances, will a student with lower than 80% attendance be allowed to progress without retaking a module.
