What does the course cover?

This course provides you with the fundamental skills you need to be attractive to a wide range of employers as well as the opportunity to develop specialist skills that will make you stand out in the graduate employment market. In particular you will be able to:

  • demonstrate financial management and accounting probity that will enable you to be effective in a modern organisation
  • understand in depth how organisations work in practice and in theory, together with an ability to apply this understanding to individual business contexts
  • show how concepts of leadership and management can be applied successfully to specific contexts in human resource management
  • design, supervise and manage organisational operations and processes
  • develop a marketing strategy and use a range of marketing tools to promote an organisation’s products and services successfully
  • demonstrate a deep understanding of the role of the law in regulating how organisations work in a modern society and the extent to which this currently addresses issues of ethics and sustainability.

In the course of investigating these key areas, you will explore a range of contemporary issues from social network marketing and e-commerce to sustainability and global business management.

In addition to our taught modules, there is also a variety of opportunities to participate in offsite leadership activities, overseas visits, innovation workshops and business improvement exercises with local employers.

Like all other students at Newman University, you will undertake a work placement that will equip you for employment after graduation.  This will give you the opportunity to develop valuable work experience in an area of business of your choice and gain practical skills valued by employers. The skills of critical thinking, evaluation (of sources of information), are valued by employers in a range of industries, both in the UK and overseas.

All of these learning processes will help you to develop personal qualities that will guide you throughout your life and career, and that will set you apart from others – qualities such as integrity, a critical and questioning approach, understanding, empathy and decisiveness.

How will I be assessed?

We know that you need more than just lectures, so you will have the support of seminars, tutorials, group activities, study skills and fieldwork (including the option to work abroad). Taught modules are assessed through a variety of different forms of coursework, such as reports, presentations, analysis tasks and reflective logs. Members of the department are always happy to give individual tutorials and advice on research and writing assignments.

The skills, knowledge and resources you develop on the programme will be relevant for a wide range of organisations and industries in the private and public sectors. This is confirmed by Newman’s Employer Advisory Group, who represent a wide variety of enterprises in the West Midlands and beyond. You must achieve either at least 96 UCAS points including a minimum of CC at A level or equivalent (e.g.MM at BTEC Diploma), or a total of 88 points from a maximum of 3 A levels.

Access Students can achieve the requirements with the following combination of Distinction, Merit and/ or Pass grades at level 3 achieved from a completed Access course. 96 UCAS Points: D21-M3-P21; D18-M9-P18; D15-M15-P15; D12-M21-P12; D9 M27-P9; D6-M33-P6; D3-M39-P3; D0-M45-P0.

5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English Language or a recognised equivalent are also required.

    Students will be required to explore the concept of ethical sustainability within their workplace.  Initially, sustainability will be considered in a social, environmental and organisational context, and then subsequently interlinked to illustrate complexity within the work setting. Subsequent, to this theory-led approach, students will be asked to identify sites of current workplace practice, which they consider can be sustainably enhanced.  Findings and recommendations will initially be presented to key stakeholders, prior to the students producing Project Initiation Document.     Students will initially be encouraged to philosophically debate and deconstruct the applicability of a range of accepted leadership propositions, when applied to a range of diverse work place contexts.  This approach will then be explored in more depth to encourage a more integral view and approach to leadership, one that considers experiential, behavioural, cultural and social and systemic phenomena, in order to manage professional complexity and uncertainty.  A key component of this module involves the provision for students to lead and carry out a range of outdoor activities normally over a two to three day period.
