This Postgraduate Certificate addresses the early career development needs of academics and HE professionals who have a role in supporting HE student learning. Its key aim is to grow course members as purposeful and effective HE practitioners who will make a positive difference to Higher Education, their students and wider society over the course of their working lives.

It comprises two year-long modules; Supporting Student Learning in HE and an Introduction to Academic Practice. The programme is an experiential work-based learning programme intended to take place alongside, and to complement, employment supporting HE student learning. Course members are expected to be able to draw on this experience in discussion sessions. They should be able to feed ideas from the course back into their practice to generate evidence of advancing professional practice. The development of course members as effective, reflective and questioning practitioners through this cycle of drawing on practice and feeding back into practice is vital to the course and enables colleagues to further develop their capacity to study and learn independently for the rest of their professional lives.

The Post Graduate Certificate takes a blended learning approach, being delivered on campus and online. Dates for 2022/23 entry are as follows:

The course is undergoing academic revalidation during this academic year.

Modules are based at Newman, usually delivered over six days during the academic year. However, if there are significant numbers of staff in one institution wishing to undertake the programme we can deliver the programme on your site at times convenient to you.

Part-time students have a maximum period of study of 5 years to complete an MA. However, an MA is typically completed over 2-3 years and we recommend that part-time students take 60 credits per year (i.e. 2×30 credit modules across the year). Full-time students have a maximum period of study of 3 years to complete an MA, but typically complete an MA in 18 months.


The assessment for this module will take the form of a patchwork text (Winter 2004) consisting of a number of mini-patch assignments [2500 words in total] and an overarching critically reflective commentary [1500 words] tying the patches together into a coherent whole to address all module outcomes.


Component 1 (50%):  A 2000-word equivalent assignment generated over the course of the module theorising practice, establishing its relationship to appropriate literature and demonstrating the learning outcomes [have been met and values addressed.

Component 2 (50%):  A 2000-word equivalent research report into a particular aspect of your HE practice to address selected outcomes in depth, informed by the values. This can take the form of action research, practitioner-led research or participant research involving peers, service providers and student partners.

Students who successfully complete EDM740 may apply for recognition as an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Those who go on to complete EDM741 may apply for recognition as a Fellow.

Credit rating: 60 credits at masters’ level

Entry Requirements

An Honours degree in a relevant subject area from a UK university or an overseas university agreed by NARIC as equivalent and subject to IELTS and EU requirements. Consideration will be given to students with lower level qualifications who have a relevant range of professional experience. Professional experience that equates to degree level will be considered by the Course Co-ordinator. If some non-graduates are to be considered pre entry tasks will be considered and used at the co-ordinator’s discretion.

The PG Cert Higher Education Practice is open to graduates who are professionally engaged in a higher education setting and who will be able to reflect on their practice in teaching and/or the support of learning of students in higher education.

International Students
Newman University is not licenced by the UK Government to sponsor migrant students under the Student route and is therefore unable to accept applications from international students at present.

Course fee UK Students – £2,000
N.B. A minimum of 60 credits are required to complete the post graduate certificate.

Course fees for 2023/24 are to be confirmed and will be available on publication by the University.

  1. This module provides an introduction to the issues and practicalities of supporting student learning in Higher Education.  It will examine the purposes of Higher Education, relevant adult learning theories and encourage students to critically reflect on how these interact with their values to shape their HE teaching practices.  The practices explored will include session design, support for informal learning, assessment and feedback, evaluation and enhancement of own teaching practice.  As such the module addresses the UK professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) for teaching and supporting learning in HE at descriptor 1. N.B: EDM740 can be taken as short course, stand-alone module, that leads to the award of an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).  
  1. This module provides an introduction to higher education practice; seeking to relate, professional expertise, subject knowledge, research and scholarship to course design.  It encourages students to critically reflect on their own professional identity(ies) as academic, practitioner and HE teacher. This is then related to in-depth examination of values-based curriculum design and the scholarship of teaching in HE.  The module addresses descriptor 2 of the UKPSF.
