This postgraduate certificate has been designed for those who wish to develop their knowledge, understanding and practice in aspects of inclusion and to improve outcomes for children and young people with SEN and/or disabilities.

Our Masters provision will be run online, with some face to face tutorials where required. The on-campus elements will vary depending on each tutor and will be discussed with students beforehand.

The course is undergoing academic revalidation during this academic year.

Modules are based at Newman, usually delivered one evening per week. However, if there are significant numbers of staff in one institution wishing to undertake the programme we can deliver the programme on your site at times convenient to you.

Part-time students have a maximum period of study of 5 years to complete an MA. However, an MA is typically completed over 2-3 years and we recommend that part-time students take 60 credits per year (i.e. 2×30 credit modules across the year). Full-time students have a maximum period of study of 3 years to complete an MA, but typically complete an MA in 18 months.

You will experience a range of work-based assessment formats as indicated below. The course will recognise your needs as a learner and develop independent study skills that are transferable to a range of learning situations and assessment tasks.

EDM746 – Inclusion and Special Educational Needs and Disability

Submission of a 4,000 word essay based on a critical analysis and evaluation of an aspect of the module to be negotiated with the module tutor according to student developmental needs.

EDM747 – The Role of the SENCO

An individual presentation on an aspect of the module relating to the student’s professional practice/experience with a written rationale (1000 words) justifying the choice of focus.

Students who complete these two modules may be eligible to complete the Postgraduate Certificate National Award for Special Educational Needs Co-ordination provided they also meet the following criteria:An honours degree from a UK university or an overseas university agreed by NARIC as equivalent and subject to IELT and EU requirements.

Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

Hold the post of Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo)

Enrol to complete the Postgraduate Certificate National Award for Special Educational Needs Co-ordination within 5 years of completing EDM746 and EDM747

Also complete EDM748, the professional portfolio.

Credit rating: 60 credits at masters’ level

Entry Requirements

An Honours degree in a relevant subject area from a UK university or an overseas university agreed by NARIC as equivalent and subject to IELTS and EU requirements. Consideration will be given to students with lower level qualifications who have a relevant range of professional experience. Professional experience that equates to degree level will be considered by the Course Co-ordinator. If some non-graduates are to be considered pre entry tasks will be considered and used at the co-ordinator’s discretion.

International Students
Newman University is not licenced by the UK Government to sponsor migrant students under the Student route and is therefore unable to accept applications from international students at present.

Course fee for this part-time course is £2,000.

  1. This module offers students the opportunity to explore the concepts of inclusion and special educational needs and disability and to critically engage with the debates surrounding the inclusion ‘agenda.’ They will gain a critical understanding of how SEND can affect pupils’ participation and learning and can cause barriers to learning that can lead to underachievement. They will explore strategies to promote a whole school culture of high expectations and best practice in teaching and learning to improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND.
  2. This module is designed to provide students with the opportunity to appreciate and develop the personal and professional qualities and leadership skills they need to promote inclusive practice and support the interests and needs of children, young people and pupils with SEND and disabilities. Students will be encouraged to critically reflect on the role of the SENCO and to critically evaluate their practice in the aspects of multi-agency working, meeting statutory responsibilities and deploying resources and systems to improve outcomes for pupils with a range of SEND and their families.
