This module, delivered during the year 1 of the MSc Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies, focuses on core therapeutic skills and the essential elements of practice in preparation for clinical placements, which will begin in year two of the programme. The main emphasis will be on therapeutic frame and the development of specific skills associated with the key theoretical modalities covered on the course. Students will gain understanding of the therapeutic process from the point of referral, to the first session, middle stages and ending of the counselling relationship, of the use of the therapeutic relationship in relation to the therapeutic process and of the role and importance of supervision.
This theory module introduces students to the literature and theoretical knowledge base of the Gestalt Therapy Theory (GTT) and begins the process of thinking critically about application of the GTT in their clinical work. This module will offer students understanding of the core approach in their integration model.

The primary aim of the MSc Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies is to facilitate students’ academic and practical professional development as part of the requirements for professional registration in psychotherapeutic counselling/psychotherapy. This allows them in order to be able to practice as Psychotherapeutic Counsellors or Psychotherapists in a range of public, private and voluntary sector contexts.
The MSc Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy provides an initial professional training in counselling and sets students on the journey towards becoming psychotherapists. It combines academic learning, reflection and clinical work. Principally aimed at providing an initial training in working with adults, the programme also includes an introduction to working with young people.
- Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy is an approach to therapy which draws on and synthesises a range of core models in counselling & psychotherapy.

Graduates will also be eligible to progress to our Advanced Diploma in Psychotherapy Studies. The completion of both the MSc Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy Studies, Certificate in Professional Practice and the Advanced Diploma may lead to eligibility for UKCP registration as an Integrative Psychotherapist trained to work with adults. This route to UKCP registration will take a minimum of 4 years and requires students to complete a minimum of 450 hours of supervised clinical practice.

The MSc Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies (and associated Certificate in Professional Practice, which is mandatory for MSc students) offers 3 years of professional study in counselling and psychotherapy and meets the taught component requirements for professional registration with UKCP in psychotherapeutic counselling, and the first three years of the four-year requirement for psychotherapy registration with UKCP.
This is a part-time programme which lasts for three academic years. Students may require some additional time to complete their supervised clinical placement. A minimum of 450 supervised counselling hours on placement is required. The programme (MSc) consists of 180 credits at level 7. All modules are mandatory. Over the three years, the programme includes over 450 hours of direct teaching time. Clinical placement hours are in addition to the direct teaching time.
During your first year of study you will attend University for taught sessions on one day per week. You will start on your journey to becoming a trained counsellor or psychotherapist. You will do this through learning about several key theoretical approaches, and about ethics and diversity. This is balanced with engaging in skills practice, as well as in personal and group reflection. Alongside this, you will also start your personal therapy, completing at least 30 hours of therapy during this year.
In the second year you will begin your counselling placement, once you are assessed as being ready for this step. This placement will continue throughout the rest of the programme. Alongside this, you will also continue your personal therapy. Once on placement, you will also have regular clinical supervision. You will continue to attend University one day per week, taking modules that deepen your appreciation of theory and of integration, alongside engagement in intermediate level skills and case discussion. By the end of the year, you will also put together a proposal for a research project.
In the final year you will continue on placement, in supervision, and in personal therapy. You will continue to attend University one day per week, taking modules that seek to make clear links with your work on placement, focussing on your academic understanding, your personal development and your development of advanced skills. In addition, you will undertake a research project for your Masters dissertation.
Teaching (lectures, seminars, and tutorials) will be delivered by Senior Lecturers, Lecturers, Visiting Lecturers and Skills Support Tutors. They have extensive experience in a range of subject areas offered within this course. The programme is coordinated by the programme leader (Faisal Mahmood) responsible for the overall professional programme. Teaching staff who take responsibility for individual modules are referred to as Module Leaders. In addition, every student is allocated a personal tutor. Here in the Counselling & Psychotherapy subject area, we currently have a team of 10 lecturing staff. All staff are registered/accredited members of UKCP, BACP or BPS.
Students are required to attend university for taught sessions one day a week. You are also required to come to university at other times, for example, for tutorials, other meetings and to use the library. Students are also entitled to at least one personal tutorial per semester.
A minimum of 80% attendance per module is required. Failure to meet this requirement for any reason will result in the student being awarded a ‘fail’ mark. The module will then need to be retaken. Only in exceptional circumstances, will a student with lower than 80% attendance be allowed to progress without retaking a module.
Additional commitments (these aspects of the training are self-funded)
- Personal Therapy: minimum 30 hours per year
- Clinical supervision: 1:6 ratio (1 hour supervision for every 6 hours of clinical work)
- Clinical placement: 450 hours (in total)
It is expected that students will undertake a considerable amount of reflecting, reading and note-taking between sessions in order to:
- prepare for/consolidate lectures
- write assignments
- reflect upon client work

As part of the enrolment process for both the MSc and Advanced Diploma, you will be expected to enrol onto the Certificate in Professional Practice (CPP) at the same time. There is no additional cost for this programme during the taught programme, however, you will be required to pay one module based fee per year (e.g. £1100 for 2019/20) once you have completed your taught programme.

You must have a 1st degree (minimum 2:2) or equivalent and have completed a face-to-face level 3 qualification in counselling skills or equivalent, have relevant experience of using these skills in a workplace or voluntary setting, and have demonstrated at interview your suitability for undertaking professional training. Those with a 1st degree, but without a level 3 qualification, may apply for the Newman Introductory Certificate in Counselling and then, on successful completion, apply for the MSc Integrative Counselling & Psychotherapy Studies.
Newman’s Record of Prior Learning (RPcL/RPel) policy can be applied to any applicants who consider they have qualifications or experience that may warrant them being granted exemption from elements of a particular course.

This twenty-credit, two-semester module provides a continuation from the module ‘Theory in Counselling & Psychotherapy 1’, further developing your understanding of key theoretical ideas, as you reach the stage of applying theory to your own clinical practice. Your central focus on this module will be on psychodynamic theory, but you also be briefly introduced to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. You will explore theories of psychological distress and mental health difficulties, and gain an understanding of the stages of human development and the key issues encountered at these stages.
This module supports students to into the early stages of their practice via the on-going support of clinical placement and clinical case discussion groups. Student’s clinical practice and case discussions are then enhanced and supported by the theoretical and practical integration of the three core component models taught on the program with advanced skills being taught in parallel. The module links efficacious clinical practice with a research ethos and skills to help the student identify an initial focus for the third year research project.

This module supports ongoing clinical practice via the on-going supervised clinical placement and clinical case discussion groups. Advanced therapeutic skills and theory are then introduced via introduction to and integration of the final of the three core component models - cognitive behavioural therapy. The module therefore links increasingly efficacious clinical practice with a broader range of therapeutic options and allows students to complete and consolidate the integration of their therapeutic model.
This module provides you with the opportunity to select an area of particular interest to you within the field of psychotherapy and counselling. Working with a tutor, you will design, plan and execute a small empirical research project in your chosen area. In the early stages, you will produce a brief initial research proposal, for discussion with your research tutor. Your proposal forms the basis for developing an application for Newman ethical approval, which must be achieved prior to commencing data collection. Your research design should employ quantitative and/or qualitative methods and draw upon and critically evaluate a range of both classic and contemporary research findings. Your project will then be written up using the author guidelines for a specific academic journal, and aim for publishable standard.
This tutored thirty credit module provides you with the opportunity to focus on and explore a particular area of clinical practice, and of theory in relation to practice, through an extended systematic case study project. You will do this through systematically exploring and evaluating an appropriate case study example from your clinical case load. In doing so you will engage in and learn about methodological issues in single-case enquiry, and apply these in your case. You will need to maintain client confidentiality and to integrate the skills of clinical practice with the rigours of academic writing. Your project will also draw upon and critically evaluate a range of both classic and contemporary theoretical aCPM nd research literature relevant to the case. Your project will then be written up using the author guidelines for a specific academic journal, and aim for publishable standard.
