This module, delivered during the year 1 of the MSc Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy Studies, focuses on core therapeutic skills and the essential elements of practice in preparation for clinical placements, which will begin in year two of the programme. The main emphasis will be on therapeutic frame and the development of specific skills associated with the key theoretical modalities covered on the course. Students will gain understanding of the therapeutic process from the point of referral, to the first session, middle stages and ending of the counselling relationship, of the use of the therapeutic relationship in relation to the therapeutic process and of the role and importance of supervision.
This theory module introduces students to the literature and theoretical knowledge base of the Gestalt Therapy Theory (GTT) and begins the process of thinking critically about application of the GTT in their clinical work. This module will offer students understanding of the core approach in their integration model.

You must have a 1st degree (minimum 2:2 or equivalent) and level 3 certificate in counselling skills with experience of having used these in a workplace or voluntary setting. Successful admittance onto the programme is also dependent upon demonstrating your suitability to undertake clinical training at interview. It may be possible in some cases for you to enter the programme without the Level 3 certificate where you can demonstrate in the application that you have acquired the specific competencies outlined in the BACP Counselling Skills Competency Framework either through an equivalent training programme or though practical experience in a voluntary or workplace setting.
Newman’s Record of Prior Learning (RPcL/RPel) policy can be applied to any applicants who consider they have qualifications or experience that may warrant them being granted exemption from elements of a particular course.
Applicants will normally be invited to a selection day for a group task and individual interview.

The total course fee for those starting in September 2022 is £11,100. The annual fee is £3,700 per year for 3 years of study.
The University will review tuition fees and increase fees in line with any inflationary uplift as determined by the UK Government, if permitted by law or government policy, in subsequent years of your course. It is anticipated that such increases would be linked to RPI (the Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments).
The following costs are in addition to your university fees:
- Personal Therapy: Minimum 105 hours (for psychotherapeutic counsellor) or 160 hours (for psychotherapist) between £40 – £65 per session. Minimum 30 hours of personal therapy per year.
- Clinical Supervision as follows: Minimum 75 hours @ between £40 – £65 per hour. 1:6 (1 hour of supervision for every 6 hours of clinical work)
- An audio recording device and / or memory cards or other approved equipment for the storage of audio client audio and / or video records
- Annual membership fees to Universities Psychotherapy & Counselling Association (UPCA) (mandatory) and UKCP (optional) – normally approximately £50
- Annual indemnity insurance (payable from year 2 of the MSc – normally at least 4 years) – estimated cost £50-80 per year.
- Initial Enhanced DBS clearance fee and update levy cost.

Certificate in Professional Practice (CPP) Enrolment
As part of the enrolment process for both the MSc and Advanced Diploma, you will be expected to enrol onto the Certificate in Professional Practice (CPP) at the same time. There is no additional cost for this programme during the taught programme, however, you will be required to pay one module based fee per year (e.g. £1100 for 2021/22) once you have completed your taught component. You will be instructed how to enrol via our admissions team upon being made an offer to the course.

This twenty-credit, two-semester module provides a continuation from the module ‘Theory in Counselling & Psychotherapy 1’, further developing your understanding of key theoretical ideas, as you reach the stage of applying theory to your own clinical practice. Your central focus on this module will be on psychodynamic theory, but you also be briefly introduced to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. You will explore theories of psychological distress and mental health difficulties, and gain an understanding of the stages of human development and the key issues encountered at these stages.
This module supports students to into the early stages of their practice via the on-going support of clinical placement and clinical case discussion groups. Student’s clinical practice and case discussions are then enhanced and supported by the theoretical and practical integration of the three core component models taught on the program with advanced skills being taught in parallel. The module links efficacious clinical practice with a research ethos and skills to help the student identify an initial focus for the third year research project.

This module supports ongoing clinical practice via the on-going supervised clinical placement and clinical case discussion groups. Advanced therapeutic skills and theory are then introduced via introduction to and integration of the final of the three core component models - cognitive behavioural therapy. The module therefore links increasingly efficacious clinical practice with a broader range of therapeutic options and allows students to complete and consolidate the integration of their therapeutic model.
This module provides you with the opportunity to select an area of particular interest to you within the field of psychotherapy and counselling. Working with a tutor, you will design, plan and execute a small empirical research project in your chosen area. In the early stages, you will produce a brief initial research proposal, for discussion with your research tutor. Your proposal forms the basis for developing an application for Newman ethical approval, which must be achieved prior to commencing data collection. Your research design should employ quantitative and/or qualitative methods and draw upon and critically evaluate a range of both classic and contemporary research findings. Your project will then be written up using the author guidelines for a specific academic journal, and aim for publishable standard.
This tutored thirty credit module provides you with the opportunity to focus on and explore a particular area of clinical practice, and of theory in relation to practice, through an extended systematic case study project. You will do this through systematically exploring and evaluating an appropriate case study example from your clinical case load. In doing so you will engage in and learn about methodological issues in single-case enquiry, and apply these in your case. You will need to maintain client confidentiality and to integrate the skills of clinical practice with the rigours of academic writing. Your project will also draw upon and critically evaluate a range of both classic and contemporary theoretical aCPM nd research literature relevant to the case. Your project will then be written up using the author guidelines for a specific academic journal, and aim for publishable standard.
