This module, delivered in whole or in part by subject-specific staff, will introduce students to the content and staff of their chosen degree subject. Students will explore the disciplinary conventions, core concepts and professional requirements of their degree. The themes under discussion will vary according to the degree the students are studying, but each degree group will enable students to gain familiarity with their chosen area of study and subject staff. In the tutor group, students will complete a capstone assessment designed by staff in their subject area.

Students will explore big ideas around higher education, society and identity as they develop their academic skills and confidence. Students will be introduced to theory, examples of which include education theories, theories of learning, race theory, gender theory. Students will be introduced to the context and development of these concepts over time, and from literary and philosophic perspectives. The module will explicitly engage with digital literacy and will include opportunities for students to engage with the online learning environment and develop their digital skills.

This module is designed to facilitate students’ further critical engagement with the context and concepts to which they were introduced in semester one. Students will exploring ideas about childhood, life and old age in a digital world and have the opportunity for the continued development of core academic skills as well as providing opportunities for students to reflect on their progress. The module will include opportunities for students to engage with the online learning environment and develop information literacy skills.

Examines a breadth of legal skills including legal research, legal referencing, legal databases, case law analysis, academic writing, legal problem solving, professional conduct and practice. This module lays the foundation of academic success in subsequent levels of study.

This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practices of contract law. The module will explore the formation, performance, and enforcement of contracts and remedies for breach of contract. The module aims to develop a critical understanding of the legal rules governing contractual relationships and the ability to apply these rules in practical scenarios.

What are the Constitutional Laws and the Administrative Laws of the United Kingdom under the Parliamentary Democracy system that recognizes the Sovereignty of Parliament and an unwritten constitution. This module explores general principles of criminal liability, the law relating to various offences, defences and common law development through case law. It explores criminal conduct, prosecution, sentencing and justice through an analysis of seminal decided cases.

This module will introduce students to the objective of the tort system and basic principles of liability underpinning tort law to consider some of the various interests that are protected. The module will explore the acts and omissions that give rise to liability and the type of harm which is actionable and for which compensation can be sought. The module deals with issues of caution and fault within particular types of action in tort, and considers the role of policy in relation to this area of law. The module also considers briefly the relevance of different modes of liability, including strict liability, vicarious liability and contributory negligence, as well as defences, and some of the potential remedies available to an action in tort.

This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of the principles of employment law, together with an insight into the extent to which the law recognises the nature of the employment relationship.

The UK triggered Article 50 TEU 29th March 2017 with the intention of leaving the European Union 29th March 2019. The EU is a supranational legal structure wielding considerable influence and power and as such its structure, institution, and legal framework remain worthy of study and understanding for its influence to date on many areas of UK law. The EU, the EU will remain an important partner both politically and economically, and an understanding of EU law in relation to the continued trade relations between the EU and the UK remains relevant now and for the future.

The module will provide an overview of key concepts and definitions as well as sources of the UK immigration and asylum law. By the end of this module, students will be able to outline the main features of immigration law relating to work, dependants, legal status of refugees, penalties and appeals.

Examines the rules relating to ownership, possession, commercialisation and conveyancing of real property – land. Covenants, easements, and other rights in property are examined. What works well and what requires further development and why? What changes would you introduce?

This module introduces students to the principles of equity and the law of trusts. It will examine the historical development of equity, the creation, constitution, and administration of trusts, and the remedies available in equity. The module aims to develop a critical understanding of how equitable principles are applied in modern legal contexts and the role of trusts in managing property and wealth.

This module aims to enable students to explore the disputes that may arise in relation to contract and tort and the relevance and application of the mediation process as a first step in resolving these in order to avoid civil litigation. Student will work in small groups to develop mediation skills through participation in simulated workshop role play activities. Students will be given feedback on their performance in advance of their assessment of undertaking mediation in relation to a contract or tort law dispute. In additions to those students will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of a range of equitable and legal remedies available and the relevant legal process for the pursuit of relevant claims.

This module provides an in-depth examination of the principles and practices of international human rights law. It examines the UN and regional International Human Rights systems and their potential to deliver on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) promise to guarantee the protection of the inherent dignity of individuals qua human beings everywhere. Students will explore what has worked well, what requires further development, and why. The module aims to develop a critical understanding of the legal frameworks that protect human rights, and the challenges faced in ensuring these rights are upheld globally.

This module explores the law pertinent to all aspects of business structures from incorporation, through to operation, management and finally insolvency. It examines legal issues related to formation and operation of businesses as a sole trader, various types of partnerships and company legislation.

Students select a topic of interest related to law. Students are then required to comprehensively research this and write an 8,000-word dissertation. All students are allocated a dissertation supervisor who will assist in formulating a topic question and guide you through the various stages to completion.

This module provides an alternate to the traditional dissertation by allowing students an alternate way of demonstrating academic rigour and a sophisticated level of written communication through undertaking a significant piece of independent research and then presenting that research as an alternate artefact. Students are supported in the selection and development of their research and artefact proposals through the introductory module lectures and workshops. Students will be provided with feedback on their submitted proposal, to offer guidance for development and the opportunity to address any inherent weaknesses. Student will be allocated a supervisor who will guide and support them through the production of these extensive pieces of work, which enables students to study with rigour and depth a chosen subject area that reflects their personal interests in law or aligns with their future career aspirations.

This module embeds subject specific employability skills and is intended to build on the skills and experiences that students have gained in previous professional practice placement modules at levels 4 and 5. The module provides an opportunity to gain work experience in a law related or graduate employability context. Law students who wish to gain credit for their work experience for the purposes of the accreditation with the Solicitors Regulation Authority will be given specific advice about this in advance.

During their Professional Practice Placement students will be expected to maintain contact with the module leader through individual 1:1 seminar sessions.

In this disruptive era, the question of what in the field of medical practice is ethical and what not so ethical is being severely tested. Can the law ever catch-up with the fast pace of change in this space, to give assurance and certainty to professionals and users of emergent advances in medical therapies? This module examines the issues.

This module introduces students to a range of property offences. Students will have the opportunity in their student and consideration of the substantive law relating to these offences and to gain an overview of the associated legal processes and procedures relevant to proceedings in the Magistrates Court and the Crown Court. Students will gain an understanding of the law relating to legal advice and including advising clients at the police station, charging procedure, consideration of bail, plea, pre-trial and case management, trial and sentencing process. This module provides an opportunity to consider some of the professional issues and relevant legal processes that arise in relation to client representation, as well as providing the opportunity to develop oral advocacy skills.
