BSc Single Honours Mental Health Nursing

This module will introduce you to the concept of health and the importance of the nurse’s role when promoting, protecting and improving health and preventing ill health across the lifespan. It will enable you to identify key factors that can impact upon health and wellbeing outcomes for individuals, families and communities, locally, nationally and globally. You will understand the potential impact that early years and childhood experiences can have on later life and the impact of individual behaviours such as smoking, diet and exercise and substance and alcohol use on health and wellbeing. You will examine models of health promotion that support health interventions, taking into consideration health literacy and reasonable adjustments. You will consider the role of the nurse in supporting individuals to stay well and understand the relevance of maintaining your own personal health and wellbeing as a healthcare professional. Health protection measures including screening programmes and immunisation and notifiable diseases and infection prevention will be explored within the local health system.

This interprofessional module will provide you with the opportunity to learn from, about and with students from other professional programmes. The use of evidence, research and enquiry is an integral part of professional health and social care practice. This module aims to prepare you to understand and critically evaluate evidence and will develop your knowledge of how to examine and improve practice through research and inquiry.  

As an interprofessional group you will be introduced to contemporary research methodologies and methods related to your profession and its underpinning knowledge base. You will examine sources of evidence and the ways to differentiate between different types of evidence. The concepts of research design, data collection, data analysis and research outcomes will be explored. Using a range of approaches and techniques you will develop confidence in systematically searching and critiquing evidence from a variety of sources to inform your own and others professional practice. 

You will also discuss the moral and ethical aspects of undertaking research demonstrating an appreciation of the role of service users in the research process. 

In this module you will develop your clinical judgement and decision-making skills which are core to the role of the competent registered mental health nurse. These skills will enable the management of complex mental health care across the life span in a variety of mental health nursing settings. Building on the skills developed in the level four modules you will advance your critical thinking, problem solving and team-working skills to manage and provide continuity of person-centred care in partnership with people, their families and carers. You will gain insight into pharmacotherapeutics and psychopharmacology within mental health nursing practice and explore the potential adverse effects of mental health medication. Throughout this module you will also build on your therapeutic communication skills and knowledge of non-pharmacological interventions used for the treatment of people with specific complex mental health care needs.

In this module you will explore the role of the nurse and other health care professionals in managing and improving patient safety, quality of care and healthcare outcomes. You will explore health and safety legislation and develop your knowledge and skills in identifying, assessing, managing risk when maintaining healthy and safe work environments. The process of reporting and critically reflecting on near misses, critical incidents and serious adverse incidents and ways in which both individuals and organisations learn and make improvements will be outlined. You will be introduced to the concept of human factors and understand their impact on patient safety and quality. You will discuss the process of systems-based healthcare investigation and root cause analysis models/ tools and apply these to a patient safety incident. The principles of courage, transparency and the professional duty of candour will be revisited in the context of raising and escalating concerns and whistleblowing in healthcare and social care environments. The importance of partnership working and communication with people, their families, carers and other professionals to encourage reflective learning and improve patient safety & quality will also be considered.

This module aims to further develop and build on your knowledge, experience and skills in a clinical practice setting relating to your field of nursing, with a specific focus upon practical skills, medicines management, multidisciplinary team working, manging people with increasingly complex health and social care needs, prioritising health needs. You will undertake study related to the underpinning theory around advanced practical skills related to nursing care alongside having the opportunity to develop those practical skills by undertaking simulated practice within the University Skills and Simulation suites. You will continue to develop an understanding of evidence-based practice and practical skills that are required to fulfil the role of the nurse. This module will prepare you for your final Nursing Care module and enable you to progress to Part 3 of the nursing programme.

This module aims to consolidate your knowledge, experience and skills in your field of nursing, with a specific focus upon on leading nursing care for people with complex needs, prioritising needs and delegating appropriately, using safe clinical judgment and decision-making, managing teams to support a group of people, and supervision. You will also reflect on your own leadership qualities in practice. You will undertake study related to the underpinning theory around advanced practical skills related to nursing care alongside having the opportunity to develop those practical skills by undertaking simulated practice within the University Skills and Simulation suites. You will apply research to evidence-based practice and consolidate the practical skills that are required to fulfil the role of the nurse. This module will prepare you for your final Nursing Care module and enable you to become the accountable professional future registered nurse required by the NMC (2018)

In this module you will further develop your critical thinking, clinical judgment and decision-making skills and build on previous knowledge gained at level four and five. A key focus of the module is relating theory to practice and applying knowledge to mental health patients with complex mental health needs. You will learn how to complete a mental health assessment, identify care needs, and coordinate care in pressured clinical situations whilst ensuring that evidence-based practice underpins your decisions. You will evaluate principles of leadership and management and reflect on your role as a leader and when manging others and delivering team-based care. The module also focuses on the cost effectiveness of the provision of nursing care, and how a business case would be developed to support the funding of an initiative in nursing practice.
