postgraduate student

The postgraduate certificate National Award for SEN Coordination (NASENCO) is mandatory for all SENCOs who are new to the role since 2009 and must be achieved within three years of taking up the post.  This programme consists of two academic 30 credit Masters modules (EDM746 and EDM761) and one year-long non-credit-bearing module (EDM748) which supports the completion of a professional portfolio of evidence designed to meet all the learning outcomes of the National Award.

Our Postgraduate provision will be run online, with some face to face tutorials where required. The on-campus elements will vary depending on each tutor and will be discussed with students beforehand.

The course is undergoing academic revalidation during this academic year.

Modules are based at Newman, usually delivered one evening per week. However, if there are significant numbers of staff in one institution wishing to undertake the programme we can deliver the programme on your site at times convenient to you.

EDM746 – Inclusion and Special Educational Needs and Disability

Submission of a 4,000 word essay based on a critical analysis and evaluation of an aspect of the module to be negotiated with the module tutor according to student developmental needs.

EDM761 – Leading in SEND & Inclusion

An individual presentation on an aspect of the module relating to the student’s professional practice/experience with a written rationale (1000 words) justifying the choice of focus.

EDM748 – Professional portfolio

A Professional Development Portfolio which demonstrates ongoing evidence of achieving all the learning outcomes of the National Award for SEN Coordination as specified by the National College for Teaching and Leadership. The evidence will be drawn from school based activities, policies, procedures and systems that SENCOs have put in place, used, developed or reviewed. The evidence will be accompanied by a series of critical reflections on the student’s professional practice informed by recent research and reading.

This can only be taken by SENCOs who must have gained, in the previous 5 years, 60 credits at Masters level covering the content of EDM746 and EDM761 or be a current student of these modules. The National Award for Special Educational Needs Co-ordination cannot be conferred until these 60 credits are successfully completed.

  1. This module is designed to provide students with the opportunity to appreciate and develop the personal and professional qualities and leadership skills they need to promote inclusive practice and support the interests and needs of children, young people and pupils with SEND and disabilities. Students will be encouraged to critically reflect on the role of the SENCO and to critically evaluate their practice in the aspects of multi-agency working, meeting statutory responsibilities and deploying resources and systems to improve outcomes for pupils with a range of SEND and their families.
  2. This module offers students the opportunity to explore the concepts of inclusion and special educational needs and disability and to critically engage with the debates surrounding the inclusion ‘agenda.’ They will gain a critical understanding of how SEND can affect pupils’ participation and learning and can cause barriers to learning that can lead to underachievement. They will explore strategies to promote a whole school culture of high expectations and best practice in teaching and learning to improve outcomes for children and young people with SEND.
  3. This level 7 module is designed to provide students with the opportunity to achieve the National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination. Students will be expected to evidence all the learning outcomes for the National Award by completing an electronic portfolio. The evidence will be drawn from school based activities, policies, procedures and systems that SENCOs have put in place, used, developed or reviewed. The evidence will be accompanied by a series of critical reflections on the student’s professional practice informed by recent research and reading. *In order to attain this full qualification to include the Professional Portfolio there is a charge of 50% of a MA module fee.
