The BA (Honours) Professional Practice is a top-up degree designed for those wishing to advance their professional practice in the workplace. If you are already in employment and have a Level-5 qualification, this top-up will allow you to gain full degree status in one-year, which can open up career progression and development.

The course will encourage professionals from a variety of workplace settings including education, care and administration to refine their professional practice. Students will be introduced to theory and analytical reflection in order to critically investigate professional experience and identity. They will be provided with opportunities to relate theory to practice and to evaluate their capacity to embrace and facilitate change in the workplace.

Students will be equipped with the skills required to make a significant impact on their own workplace practices and to positively influence those of others.

Professional Practice is part of our Education and Multi-Professional Practice (EMPP) suite of courses.

The programme is delivered through a blend of online materials and taught sessions at Newman, ideal for those working full-time while completing their studies.

Attendance is once every two weeks on campus (alternate weeks /fortnightly) + online interactive learning following a Blended Learning model.

This course is an ideal route for those looking to build on existing professional skills and continue their professional development in non-teaching roles.

The skills and knowledge gained from this course are transferrable to a range of disciplines or employment opportunities, including leadership and management.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements are flexible and recognise a range of academic qualifications (with normally a Level 5 qualification required), as well as relevant work experience.

International Students
Newman University is not licenced by the UK Government to sponsor migrant students under the Student route and is therefore unable to accept applications from international students at present.

Course Fees

Course fees for 2023 for both the full-time and part-time Top-Up is £9,250 for external students. For external students who have completed a Foundation Degree at Newman, the fees for the part-time route is £7,200.

The University will review tuition fees and increase fees in line with any inflationary uplift as determined by the UK Government, if permitted by law or government policy, in subsequent years of your course. It is anticipated that such increases would be linked to RPI (the Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments).

Timetables: find out when information is available to students

As a part-time undergraduate student, you choose how many modules to study each year (up to a maximum of 6). To qualify for a student tuition fee loan you will need to choose at least 4 modules. A normal 3-year degree will take 4.5 years to complete if you take 6 modules per year. You will be taught alongside full-time undergraduate students.

The modules displayed are for the full-time route, for part-time modules will be split across the duration of the course.

  1. In this double module we invite students to select an educational topic of personal interest to be explored through field research in real educational settings and reported in a written study of some 10,000 words.  The dissertation is designed to enable students to investigate educational phenomena that hold particular interest for in them and actively encourages the exercise of originality and personal autonomy. The module aims to draw and build upon students' previous knowledge and experience.
  2. This module aims to equip students with key knowledge, understanding and skills to enable students to engage with research at undergraduate dissertation level.  Students will be introduced to knowledge and skills necessary to understand literature evaluation, research design, data and information collection techniques, data analysis and interpretation and academic writing.
  3. This module focuses on personal development as a professional in the workplace. To help analyse issues surrounding professional enquiry students will be introduced to a range of theoretical positions including reflection, biographical approaches and life history in order to critically investigate professional experience and identity.
  4. This module provides students with the opportunity to gain a reflective understanding of the current issues around leadership, with a particular focus on the management of change. This will involve developing a range of skills, knowledge and understanding concerned with team membership, management and leadership as well as pertinent theories to support becoming an effective leader. Theoretical perspectives and research on leadership and management will be presented and analysed in order to increase students’ understanding and appreciation of the roles and values of professionals from a range of backgrounds. Students will also participate in activities that will enable them to learn from their own and others’ experience of leadership and management in practice in order to develop their own leadership and management strengths.
  5. This module examines key ways in which psychology contributes to understanding both individual and organisational aspects of professional practice. Individual, group and societal processes will be critically considered, as a basis for supporting professional development, interventions and decision making more generally. The module emphasises the ways in which a professional identity emerges interactively as a ‘psychological object’ and ways our subjective mental states and larger dynamic processes shape and challenge these processes. Space will be given to divergent approaches to problem solving, acceptance and optimising professional performance. Conflict between different psychological stances (including rival theoretical models) will be highlighted to support critical engagement with the topic. Intrapersonal and relational approaches will be included.
