This programme builds on your previous experience of studying sport enabling you to become a graduate in sport and exercise science. On this course you will be given the opportunity to examine practical, professional and theoretical elements that influence sports and exercise performance, participation and health. You will also explore how the very best practitioners improve sporting performance and how they are able to make life changing interventions for those suffering from obesity and other poor health related conditions.

Please note that from 2021 there will be a change of modules on this course, in line with level 6 (year 3) of our re-validated BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science degree.

 

  • Modules are vocationally relevant, ensuring that our graduates are in the best position to pursue careers in their chosen profession.
  • The course content is informed by relevant professional bodies including the British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES), the Association of Physical Education (AfPE), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and the European College of Sports Science (ECSS).
  • You are taught by active researchers who apply their expertise in the world of sport.
  • The lecturers on this course regularly present at international conferences and provide sports science support to elite level athletes.
  • You will engage in practical and sport and exercise-based laboratory-based work.
  • You are encouraged to develop your own areas of academic research and relate your studies to practical sports situations.

On this degree you will explore all the major sub-disciplines associated with sport and exercise science. This will include modules in sports and exercise psychology, exercise and sport physiology, performance analysis and biomechanics. You will gain an understanding of the different scientific theories that can be applied in sports science and become an expert in making use of scientific methods of enquiry, interpreting and analysing scientific data and using a range of the latest technologies in sports and exercise science in our human performance laboratory. You will also develop the skills needed to monitor and evaluate responses to sport and exercise effectively.

As well as enhancing knowledge and experience of sport and exercise science, you will develop skills in communication, leadership, ICT, time management, organisation, critical thinking, presentation, problem solving, data handling and project management.

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, workshops, seminars and practical sessions. Assessment is by a combination of written examinations, presentations, assessed coursework and practical tests. The coursework may include a working portfolio, laboratory manuals, reports and essays.

As a Newman Sports and Exercise Science graduate, you will be well-equipped for a wide range of careers in sports science, coaching and related areas, including positions supporting elite athletes and teams. You could also be making a difference to real everyday lives by providing interventions for the sedentary, obese, elderly and ill. You will be well-prepared to continue your studies at postgraduate level to obtain higher degrees and acquire further specialist skills.

We are currently working towards full accreditation of course, thus eventually our courses will be recognised by CIMSPA as equipping students with the skills that employers are looking for.

Entry Requirements

All applicants will need to have 120 credits at level 4 and 120 credits at level 5 in a relevant Foundation Degree or HND. To progress directly onto level 6 (third year of the degree) applicants should normally achieve an overall merit or distinction. Applicants not achieving this can enter at level 5 (second year of the degree programme).

All applicants intending to progress directly onto level 6 are required to attend and pass a bridging module prior to enrolment. This module focuses on research methods and academic writing. Applicants not achieving pass this module will enter the programme at level 5  (second year of the degree programme).

International Students
Newman University is not licenced by the UK Government to sponsor migrant students under the Student route and is therefore unable to accept applications from international students at present.

Course Fees

The full-time course fee for September 2023 is £9,250 per year.

The University will review tuition fees and increase fees in line with any inflationary uplift as determined by the UK Government, if permitted by law or government policy, in subsequent years of your course. It is anticipated that such increases would be linked to RPI (the Retail Price Index excluding mortgage interest payments).

Timetables: find out when information is available to students

  1. This module builds on prior learning and offers students the opportunity for further development of their skills, knowledge and understanding through conducting an independent research project.  The project is regarded as an important exercise for developing students’ abilities to formulate appropriate research design and procedures, to collect and present in an appropriate and meaningful way, to conduct a critical analysis of relevant literature, and to demonstrate their understanding and application of theoretical principles.  The research focus must be specific to their degree pathway.  
  2. You will explore and critically evaluate the latest developments in enhancing physiological performance and the underpinning science behind preparation for and recovery from exercise and performance.
  3. Understanding of the major applied techniques used in the biomechanical analysis of sporting activity, such as 3D motion capture, and how these maybe used to improve sports performance and reduce the risk of injury.
  4. This module explores the application of psychological profiling and intervention techniques in a variety of sporting situations. It seeks to develop a critical and evidence based approach in the selection of specific strategies for individuals and groups. It further seeks to provide a basis for appraising and critically evaluating the impact of any intervention strategies employed with reference to their effectiveness, appropriateness, and ethical use.
  5. Explore a range of current issues that are influencing the science and policies surrounding sport and exercise. You can then choose which interests you and explore these in greater depth.
