How to Apply (School Direct) 2021 Entry

Once you have used the DfE Find Service to identify a suitable course(s), you apply via UCAS, by following the appropriate link in the Apply section of the chosen listing. Please make a note of the Training Provide Code and the Training Programme Code, before selecting the Apply link. .
You may select three choices for a route into teaching. These applications are forwarded to Newman and/or the school(s) selected, and all candidates must meet Newman’s standard entry requirements.
What happens after you have applied?
Many School Direct places are managed through a cluster of schools working together, with one classed as the lead school. The School and the University discuss your application and whether you should be called for interview.
For School Direct, schools take the lead interviewing to assess a candidates suitability to teach.
During the application process, you will need to
- Complete a personal statement
- List referees who will be able to support your application. You are advised to prepare your referees in advance, as any application is not ‘live’ until your references are uploaded.
Once your application is submitted, it is processed as soon as possible and if successful you will be called for interview. The schools will explain the interview process as it varies according to school and phase. You might be asked to teach part of a lesson, teach a small group of students. or a presentation. It is essential that your lesson or teaching activity shows that you have an understanding of how to engage and motivate children. You are not expected to be a ‘teacher’ at this stage, but you should be able to show that you have an understanding of how to engage with young people. It is important to remember that at this stage both the school and Newman University are looking for potential rather than the finished article.
Offers for places are made after a successful interview and are conditional on candidates meeting the standard entry requirements.
