In its 50th year Newman is set to host the Cathedrals Group Choirs Festival
2018 is the year in which Newman University, Birmingham celebrates its 50th anniversary and throughout the year the university will be hosting a number of events for staff, students, alumni and members of the public.
The first event to kick start the year of celebrations is the Cathedrals Group Choirs Festival which is to be held at Symphony Hall in Birmingham on Saturday 24th February. Newman University will be hosting the 30th Annual Choirs Festival which will see performances from some of the country’s best university choirs.
Following performances from the individual choirs, visitors will also be able to experience a mass choir performance of the epic requiem mass: Grande Messe des Morts by Berlioz, featuring soloist Stephen Mills and accompanied by the Birmingham Philharmonic Orchestra.
The event promises to be a joyful and uplifting occasion for everyone and with tickets at just £10 per person and £5 for concessions, the festival caters for all.
Derek Wroughton, Choir Director at Newman University and Chair of the Cathedrals Group of Universities Choir Directors, commented “This event is an annual focal point for our university choirs, and we are thrilled to be hosting this year as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations. The Berlioz is a huge piece which, because of its scale, is not frequently performed. This occasion gives opportunity for our choirs to take part in what may be for them a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience!”
