Newman University’s Dr Stefan Lawrence was asked to contribute to a short film produced by the popular football YouTube channel COPA90.

COPA90 aims to entertain, inform and celebrate football and its fans with interviews and challenges with footballers, in depth documentaries about fan culture or animations and explainers about the biggest stories in football.

One of their latest documentaries, ‘Why Do British Asians Never Make it Pro?’, features producer Adam McKola exploring the topic of why professional football in Britain appears to overlook British Asians. Adam speaks with footballers, coaches and also Newman’s Dr Stefan Lawrence to hear the reasons for this and what can be done to improve involvement for British Asians in football.

Dr Lawrence is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology of Sport and Course Co-ordinator for the BA (hons) Sport and Exercise Studies. He is also the Founder of the Digital Football Network and a Birmingham County FA Anti-Discriminatory Panel Member. Dr Lawrence uses his own research and knowledge of expertise to address the topic on the recent YouTube video.

The short film has now reached over 87,000 views on YouTube and can be seen on COPA’s channel.
